Another dumb question (KDP)

This is with reference to the dreaded KDP

Firstly do you have to buy a complete new case if you have the old style case??
If not, can you change the pin?? ( I know that it may be a really stupid question, but someone's got to ask it ).
What is the cost of a new case, gasket and what is the part number??? thanks guys, just bear with me...............

If you didn't get bit by the KDP you won't need to replace the gear case. All you would need to do is tap it back in and tab it. You don't even need to replace the pin either. Give yourself a couple of hours and you will feel much better knowing the pin won't fall out.

This might give you an idea of what it takes to replace the timing case. I would follow Tom's advice first.

Thanks guys for the really useful information, just one question, when you say tabbed the pin i take it you mean, that you use a punch to pinch the pin in place or am i misunderstanding what you meant.

Is there a part # for the gasket so i can order one, as this will take sometime to get to the UK.

I will do the KDP for my own peace of mind. How do you tell if you have a new type case that does not need any work done to it??? Thanks again....

As far as tabbing goes check this out. If you take the cover off, I would tab it instead of using a pin punch and lock tight the bolt when you put it back in. But you could do both. In order to get the jig you can e mail Harold @ rvhvnfn@juno.com.

KDP tabbing instructions

You can also get a kit to do the jig repair method , instructions are here.

KDP jig instructions

If you use the jig method you don't remove the timing cover unless the pin is out too far to get the bolt in. In that case you have to remove the timing cover. I was able to clean up and reuse the gasket on my 1997 when I tabbed it. I had a gasket and crankshaft seal ready incase I had to use them, and I took them back after the job. I'm sorry I don't know the gasket # right off hand. Do you have access to a Cummins dealer that is close to you? See if you can find one here.

Cummins

I don't think that there is any way to see if you have an updated case without removing the cover. At that point I would be ready to tab it if it's not.

I hope this helps, Good luck, Frank.

How many years has Dodge has this problem? No recalls! Do they have the problem fixed in the years after 2000? Why or why not! When did they change the cover to hold this in-thanks!

Dodge has had the problem as long as Cummins has supplied them engines. You don't hear much about it until 94 when the P-Pump was introduced. The case was redesigned around 1998, but the old style was common through 2000 and I believe as high as 02 trucks.

Neither Cummins or Dodge have issued re-calls.

I found this on another thread.

Cummins gasket p/n 3918673
Dowel pin tab p/n 3958017
Crank seal p/n 3804899

This also looks likes a good deal and assumes you are going to reuse your cover gasket.

Thanks for all the great info Fschiola, i note the TST kit, covers engines up to 98 on the web site.
Are 24v,s the same configuration as 12v,s, in case and dowel pin design?? what i mean is will i be able to use the tab kit on my 99--24v??

My engine is a HO does this make any diffrence??

It would seem 24v engines are also susceptible to KDP, but the problem was sorted by the time 3rd gen came along.

I am trying to get some prices on the KDP jig kit, if it is more cost effective i will probably use this approach, but the tst kit is only $48, so who knows.

Thankis Guys.....................................

My understanding from reading here is that there are potential problems up to the 2000 model year. The parts should be the same though.

When I called Cummins tech support, they assured me that the ISB 24 valve engines weren't susceptible to the dowl pin failure only the 12 valve, mechanical injection pump engines needed the preventive KDP fix.

Every '98.5 I've done had the old case. I've done '99's with both styles. Every '00 truck I've done had the new case, so I don't do 'em anymore. Just because it's a 24 valve doesn't mean you're safe.
