Angry Alternator problem

Yesterday when I started my truck I noticed the usual cycling of the grid heater but about a mile along I got the check gages light and chime. The voltage dropped way down. I stopped the truck and restarted it, light and chime gone. It now seems that it is only putting out minim voltage. If the computer controls the voltage, and if a code was thrown, do I need to clear the code to make it work again? It has been raining so I was'nt able to do any checking. While it was running I raised the hood and smelled something hot, the alternator was the thing. I guess that fried, I just shut it off and went in the house.

you might want to check the grid heater relays as well...as the alternator
