Alternator

So my truck kept dieing on me so I ended up replacing the alternator and I also put 2 new batteries in. Turns out the alternator is not charging. All of my fuses are good but it seems like I'm losing the voltage somewhere in between the fuse box and the alternator. Any ideas of where I'm losing that voltage. 98.5 dodge ram 3500. Any information is greatly appreciated

Check all grounds. Reading the manual on a 99 it appears there is a voltage regulator located within the PCM. It's called an Electronic Voltage Regulator or EVR. Voltage is regulated by cycling the ground path to control the strength of the rotor magnetic field. It monitors the line voltage and battery temp sensor to determine a charging voltage.

Have you hooked up a scan tool to see is there are any codes?

When you say all fuses, does that include the bolted in 140 amp one going from the Alternator power wire to the fuse box under the hood?

That is easy to blow and most people don't know it is there. Right were the power wire bolts onto the fusebox.......

All of my grounds are good, i have not checked the EVR and i have hooked up the scan tool but since my injection pump is starting to act up it begins to send all types of codes.

I was also told that there is a fusible link between the fuse box and the alternator, any idea where that may be located???

Never heard of that, that is what the 140 amp fuse is for. Do a continuity check to be sure though.

I don't think the 2nd gen 24 Valve trucks ever had fusible links.

Let me ask this, does your cruise control, A/C, and tachometer work properly?

If not, you likely have a faulty crankshaft position sensor.

What does your dashboard voltmeter read while running, and are there any check engine or check gauges lights lit?

Check gauge light comes on when batteries start getting low. I'm just running on battery juice right now I have to charge them every day. And the gauge is between the 8 and 14 at the first white line and check gauge turns on when it gets below that.

It would be worth posting those codes. Just because the pump may be going doesn't mean the codes related to the PCM won't be there. Post all the codes and I'll be more than happy to research them.

Yes, please post the codes.

First white line on the voltmeter is about 11 Volts. Should be around 14 Volts while running.
