Question Alternative means of getting codes out of a '99 Dodge?

We are tirng to get codes out of an otherwise dead in the water truck. It has the digital odometer and i did try the "crack the key 3 times" deal and did not work. I was wondering if there was another way of extracting the codes other than a scaner? We are pretty sure the pump is dead but need some better info to test our theory. Truck just cranks. Any suggestions would be appricated in helping diagnosis. Thanks in advance!

No way on the codes, only a scanner. Crack a line before the injection pump and see if the lift pump is supplying fuel. If so then crack an injector line at the head and see if the injection pump is supplying fuel to the injectors.

That is exactly what we did. We ended up buying a cheep OBDII scanner anyway....we needed it bad! haha...we found NO pressure from lift pump to fuel filter at all. And the pump was real noisey. So we are going to try a lift pump and see what happends. Tank is fuel of RED! Ill post what we find....

Well, since the lift pump has obviously been dead, the VP injection pump probably is too.

Once you change out the LP, if it still doesn't fire up, I'll bet it's the injection pump next.

Just think- all that money saved on buying red dye fuel can now be spent on a new VP-44!

Are you guys sure that you cannot get the codes out with the key trick? I got one out of my wife's 2004 caravan that way.

Not on a 99 Ram, doesn't work.

Works on 2000+ Dodges though.

I'm pretty sure the 98 had another procedure.

Something like holding the trip reset in while turning the key on.

Not sure though.

I do know that holding the tripometer button in, while turning the key to the on position, sends the computer into a 'systems check'. At least on my '01.
