Alittle lost

Ok a friend of mine just bought a 2001 dodge. The truck ran great for about a week. It has a fass system installed,a small set of injectors, and an edge box. The truck does have gauges.

Recently the truck will every now and then just not run right, He said it will only reach about 1300 rpms and is smoking like crazy, not running smooth, and turns on the CEL.

The funy thing is he can shut the truck off maybe once or twice then it will run normal like nothing ever happened.

He called a local shop that does repairs and they told him it needed a lift pump? He doesn't have a FP gauge yet. So the fuel pressure is unknown. But wouldn't the Fass (its the 95) supply enough fuel even without the factory LP?

His FASS should supply enough fuel if it is working correctly. Your description will bring out the "its the VP dude" crowd, but more info would help.

What color is the smoke?

What codes are in the computer (key trick works on an '01)?

Has he tried turning the comp down or off when it runs rough? The Edge boxes are known for going bad, so this may be one of those cases.

We definitely need to know what codes are present...that will probably tell the story.

Sorry, P0216 is usually one of the VP44 death codes. P0237 is map sensor voltage.

I'm an optomist...........I'd fix the map sensor first and see what happens.

Try running with the comp completely disconnected for a couple of days (back to stock). Some guys have had the death code (PO216) for a year. It's a cheap troubleshooting method to eliminate problems.

The PO216 code isn't good, sorry dude.

Ok just got off the phone again. He said the codes came up after he unplugged the box. He wanted to see if maybe the box was causing the problem. He said that while idling he unplugged the box then the CEL came on. So he shut the truck down, plugged the box back in and fired it up. No CEL and it ran fine. Wasn't sure if unplugging the box with the truck running might throw a code for something.

On a side note he also said sometimes the box won't turn on, or off. And sometimes when it's on it doesnt seem to actually be making anymore power.

Sorry guys for not being able to be very descriptive. But I am merely relaying information that I recieve over the phone. But thanks a ton for all the help.

When he disconnected the box, it probably interupted the MAP signal from the box to the ECM, which would light the CEL. Try and get the codes cleared, either by a scan tool, tuner, or disconnecting the batteries, and starting fresh. Could do an APPS reset at that time too. The codes will be stored for some time, so just removing the box won't remove the code, if it were causing it.

I have seen a bad ground to the Comp Box cause an issue like this. BUT the 95 GPH is more than enough for this truck. I would have him invest in a fuel pressure gauge though.....good tool to have.
