AC problem

I have a 2001. I just turned on my ac for the first time today and it's not blowing any cold air. The compressor is cycling on and off. (should it do this on straight ac?) The sliver tube that goes under the airbox and into the cab is ice cold but the tube coming from inside the cab to the black bottle on the firewall is warm, and there is no water dripping from the firewall drain. If I remember the black bottle is suppose to be ice cold with condensation on it.

It seems like whatever is wrong is in the cab somewhere. Anyone know where I can start looking?

I have a small leak in my system, probably the condenser under the dash. I can usually get by all summer with one can of refrigerant, so I have not bothered to fix it yet. You can get a can of refrigerant and a gauge pretty cheap, it is pretty to do and comes with directions

Thanks! I just check the auto parts and it's about $22 Is the place to fill right by the passenger side battery in our trucks?

No thats the high pressure port, you are going to want to use the other one, the small one close to the turbo. This is the low side, always charge on the low side.

Ok Thanks. So just to double check, it's this one I need to refill into right?

Yes, that's the low side port between the turbo and BHAF.

Ok, I bought a can of 134a and plugged in into the low side port. I turned my ac to full and the compressor is cycling of and on about every 3 or 4 seconds. When it clicks on the pressure drops to around 20psi, when it clicks off the pressure raises to about 50psi. So I don't know which pressure reading to go by. I'm suppose to have around 35-45 psi. I'm guessing that with the compressor engaged solid like it's suppose to be but since mine might be low it's clicking on and off.

So do I go by the 20psi engaged pressure and fill it to where it's 40psi engaged? That would probably put it at 70psi when the compressor is off. And is it normal for the pressure to be higher when the system is turned off?

yes when the compressor is off the lines equalize. the line that you are putting the freon in should be the line that is cold. if you see frost on one spot on the line then there is a problem in that spot.

thanks. I got it working. Slowly added refrigerant and the compressor stoped cycling on and off. Added until I was at about 42psi and ac is ice cold now.
