About to buy
Hi, I am about to buy a 02 2500 truck with a Cummings of course and I kind of know the truck but still would like to know what I should look for. I know there is probably a million things but the cracked block thing worries me a little. How can I tell if this is a truck that may be suseptable to this or is there a specific place that this may happen that I can check?
Most commonly under the turbo just below the freeze plugs and above the oil pan rail. Search for "53 block" in this forum which appear to be more susceptible to cracking for more good info.
Welcome to the forum. Good luck with your purchase. Just a word of warning. The engine is a CUMMINS not cummings. These guys will castrate you in short order for the G. Let us know what you find with the truck and we want pics.

Ha Ha It was a slip of the finger! I think she is a good truck, Farm truck so kind of beat up but well maintained mechanically. 200K kilometers (120k mi) new rubber, brakes and Amsoil in everything. 6 speed and everything works. Needs a seat repair and a little paint and she will be good as new (well almost) Lots of power! lots and lots! Anyway I am getting for $7000 so the price is exceptional.

Check for history on the fuel system for lift pump and vp-44 injection pump replacement.
Check the current fuel pressure and for any codes the first thing you do after you get it home is PUT A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE IN IT !
2wd or 4x4 ?

Take it to a shop and have them pull the DTCs (codes). Check the fuel pressure from the lift pump (the shop might be able to do this, too). Spray around the block/cylinder head gasket with a lot of brake cleaner and then run the engine and look for any fluid leaks. I wouldn't worry about a cracked block too much as these are HEAVY DUTY engines! Good luck, it sounds like a good deal....
