Last week my dad had his replaced- 5th gear syncros and input shaft bearing were bad. His is a 99 and the tranny had over 100k and he has over 200k on the truck. He pulls a 28 ft featherlight enclosed trailer 99% of the time in Kansas,Nebraska,Colorado,Oklahoma,Texas and, Wyoming. His GVW is only around 18-20k.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. <br><br>You're saying that your synchros grenaded? While you were shifting into 6th, or after? What kind of oil do you have in the case? What do you do with the vehicle? On other DTR threads, people talk about losing synchros and having hard shifting after 50-60K miles, but I haven't heard much about them breaking up. <br><br>Every NV5600 I've driven has notchy shifting, but I'm wondering whether it's a quality control problem. I first went on the market in the '01 model year. Drove a half-dozen 2500's with NV5600's. Two of them had *very* notchy, difficult shifting. The others were much better. Last year, when I was ready to pick up a 3500, I drove four of them. Two of them had the same issue -- I chose one of the other two that didn't. <br><br>Why would the Con FE help in this problem? <br><br>GP<br><br>

Cold, huh? As in below zero *F. . . . Got the fix: Mount a circuit of copper tubing from the bottom and to the top of the transmission. Run a heat thermostat (open when oil is below 35*F) in the circuit. Wrap the copper tubing around your exhaust pipe. 
What causes synchros to blow that way? Maybe they stick partially engaged when the lubricant and surfaces are cold, and slowly grind and hammer until they shatter?
If so, might be a lubricant issue. I've noticed that the Texaco/Shell 1874 MTX code that DC & NVG specify for the 5600 has inferior characteristics compared to other synthetics like Redline MTL and Royal Purple -- higher pour point, lower flash point, less stable viscosity, etc. NVG's answer to this issue is simply: "We chose to test the product only with MTX, and will not recommend any other."
Redline got back to me and stated that it was a corporate decision -- they'd tested MTX and found no special additives or characteristics that were outside of industry standards of measurement.
On the Con FE -- I wondered whether it was some characteristic of the clutch, bearing, or plate themselves, or whether the installers had set it up differently than stock.

My best friends 2000 just had the 5th and 6th gears go out on his and the local ******* said that it was just a bad gear set. He has a 2500 and puts lots of miles on, pulling no weight.<br>I have not had any problems with mine until about 1 week ago. I have a humm in all gears. Sounds almost like the transfer case gearset is partially engaged. If you have ever driven a big truck and left the pto engaged; this is a similar sound. Going to take it to my buddies shop and pull it down to check it out. I pull heavy loads everyday and have so far been real pleased with the NV.<br>Does anyone know if someone builds aftermarket trans specifically for pulling loads? (ie - Mitchell?)

This dealer is really taking their time. They have had the truck since Feb 23! They lied to me saying they had to wait for parts...I checked...available at all the DC supply depots...2 day delivery.<br>Service mgr tells me one story, Parts Mgr tells another and mechanic tells me yet another.<br><br>Called DC today. If the truck is not done tomorrow...stuff will hit the fan from DC as they researched it all and it should've been done in the first week.<br>Got a file number and notes from DC to cover the trans for future repairs if needed after regular drivetrain warranty is expired. I know I have 12 months unlimited on the repairs...they posted this for the entire transmission.<br>So I guess when it breaks down in the middle of nowhere I can rest easy knowing I can go through this all over again.<br><br>
