Re:NV 5600 failures

Hey guys, new to the board ;D

Question for all of you who had NV5600 failures.

Did any of you have any noise from the trans while driving the truck before it let go?

Reason I'm asking is I have had this vibration/noise at 1900-2200rpm since the first of Febuary. Got in the truck to head to work one day and I could tell something just didn't sound and feel right while rowing through the gears. Just seemed to happen out of the blue. It's there all the time and seems more pronouced in 3rd thur 6th gear, drives me nuts going down the highway when it hits those rpm's. Now I know all about the exhaust drone that these trucks have and it almost sounds like that but a lot louder but the fact that you can feel a vibration on the go pedal and floor board at those rpm's that wasn't there before Feb. leads me to believe it's something else.

I was thinking what turns at the same rpm's as the engine all the time and all I can come up with is the power steering/brake booster pump, and the typical belt driven stuff, and the main input shaft on the trans. It doesnt do it while in nuetral has to be going down the road.

Sorry for the long rant but this is driving me crazy. Truck is a 2001.5 Quad swb ETH/DEE with 22,500 miles. Thanks tmccormick.

Re:NV 5600 failures

Did any of you notice a change in the shifting of the tranny just before it went out(more notchy, harder shifting, etc...)? My tranny is behaving like the clutch is not entirely disengaging once I drive it for a few miles and it warms up. I have trouble going into 1,2 and R. The behavior is hit and miss, 20% of the time the tranny shifts smoothly and the rest of the time it is hard to get into gear and shifts really notchy.
I have about 53K on the truck and this started around 51k, I have a camper on the back( 2.5K lbs ) often. My truck was manufactured Feb 01'.

Re:NV 5600 failures

Gear Poet, yes thats what I meant...can be going down the highway and take it out of gear...smooth as silk, vibration/noise goes away. Put it back in 6th and it all comes back. Speed of the truck doesn't seem to matter, its just at those rpms and it seems to be getting worse the more i drive it.

I'm a member of the TDR and I posted this problem but may have confused everyone because I added the VP44 oscilation sound the pump makes like it shifts gears but the truck has been doing that as long as I can remember. They kind of blew it off as the exhaust drone but I know darn well thats not what I'm experiencing now. I have NOT reposted on the TDR about this because I just wanted to see if it gets any worse as it seems to be. I was just checking out this board and noticed the thread about the NV5600 failures and had to post

Someone on the TDR said some folks were finding loose bell housing/trans and flywheel bolts and I did check all that(bell housing and trans) and found nothing loose. Just wonder if possibly I have a flywheel/clutch issue here because just as benc stated in the above post about the shifting feel and clutch ingaugement seems to have changed also.

Thanks for the replys tmccormck.

Re:NV 5600 failures

OK let me clear a couple of things up.

First off since new, the truck never did have the shifting problems some have had, still shifts without being "notchy" or grinding.

Second, it makes this vibration/noise in ALL gears just more pronouced in 3rd,4th.5th and worst of all 6th. 6th gear seems to produce the loudest hum and most vibration while crusing down the highway at 1900-2200rpm. One other thing I might add is when just crusing at that rpm then mash the throttle it REALLY makes alot of noise/vibration untill the rpms hit about 2600rpms then kind of goes away.

It really feels like there is something loose the way the vibration is felt on the pedal and floor board.

Also I havn't taken the truck to the dealer yet just for the fact they will probably say they cannot reproduce the problem :

Re:NV 5600 failures

Gear Poet: Youve taken my breath away with that rant! Nice job, think I need a tissue. ... I think your right, the dealer would probly have issue's if I went to something like that. I am just going to drive the truck and if it goes, well the dealer has to own up to it. Period! I just love walking into a dealership with a warrenty problem and act stupid, let them dig there own hole, and then, WHAM! Suckers!

Re:NV 5600 failures

I've only dealt with the six speed in my dad's vette and those are prone to blow the second and third gear snychros cause of the way they are set up (tranny is in rear of car instead of center). Apparently, you can't speed shift these things. Not all T-56's are like this, only the Vette's. One time, we blew all the synchros, second and third gears were smooth, the cones were busted, the shift forks were bent. With only 4000 miles on it!!!!! 2000 miles later, back in the shop for the same thing. Put a short throw shifter on it about 2000 miles ago and haven't had a problem since. I'm wondering if maybe you can pull to far back on the stick and put a bind on the snychros. I know that that may have been a cause on the vette since we had previously installed a new handle on it and it raised it to high and gave you to much leverage. Just a thought for those of you who race your trucks.

Re:NV 5600 failures

Sorry to here about your troubles. You have got a crappy dealer. I am amazed with all these people talking about NV5600 problems. That tranny has been super for us. We have sold a bunch of em and have never had to replace one. Unless you count the one that came out of the factory with NO OIL in it It had 10 mile son it by the time it got to us and it had a noise so we checked the fluid and there was none. DC sent us a new tranny asap and then we were good as new

Re:NV 5600 failures

I'm sorry to hear about that. That really sucks. Kind of like my dealer. Took truck in on Mon for new pump. Got a call Tues saying that warranty is voided cause of FP gauge. Argue with that. Check pressure on Wed, decided that it needs a new pump (no kidding :). Ordered pump Thurs. Received pump Fri. morning had it back to me Fri. night. : : See if I ever go back to them again.

Re:NV 5600 failures

If the transmission was set up correctly and was not abused then the failure is most likely caused by the steel used for the gears being out of spec.. I have 63k on mine and it has been great. I still shift like it has an older transmission. This transmission does not like being forced to go into a gear that it is not ready to go into.

Re:NV 5600 failures

Scotty do you have access to the Gear Centre, these guys usually stock stuff like NV5600's. Have the DC rep push the dealer into picking up the "New" trans at The Gear Center using dealer to install only. Discuss the issue of down time back charge as you use the truck for work. Disclose the name of the dealer and locally we will help you not promote them. The DC rep is going to tell you he can't do that-horsepucky-he has the ability to out source for parts when necessary just like they can access Cummins for most parts when they can't supply for the engines. You also have the right to move the vehicle to another dealer to do the warranty work when the existing one is unsatisfactory. You already realize these guys are good at the BS shuffle,so purchase a Polaroid or digital and photograph all that they say is wrong. Take a witness with gear experience and mechanics license while you document the failure as discribed by there tech. Do not allow them to dispose of any parts until documented. They will then try to ban you from their shop based on insurance, more crap you have the right as the owner to be involved directly in all descisions regarding "your" property. Life sucks for them if your second witness happens to be a lawyer in blue jeans. PK

Re:NV 5600 failures

You've got more patience than I do. What pisses me off is that since I'm 17, they think that I'm just some dumb punk kid who doesn't know anything and that they can BS me around to no end. I've had to get my parents invovled many times cause that's what my dealer did to me. Once my parents got involved, started happening a lot quicker. I hate being a teenager. Hope everythign goes alright with your truck man. Later.
