I didn't understand what "do that tab" means. in that one set of instructions.
What tab are we talking about??

And it sounded like there may be a seal or gasket kit or something like that...where would I get that?

I've never pulled a timing chain cover off a diesel before,, only gassers.

This is a simple case of MASS HYSTERIA .

After two hourds of tear down mine has the NEW TIMING CASE!

I'm leaning towards any 99 does not need to kill the KDP.

My ENGINE build date is 9/8/98.

Now I'm going to put the beast back togeather.

If someone says now; "I'll sleep better." my head is gonna explode. This was a monumental WASTE OF TIME!

I took delivery of my "99" in October of 1998. Obviously, they were out of the old cases by then.

I've had car insurance for over forty years and never have used it once, was it a waste of time?

Take my word for it, some '99s have suffered pin damage.
The only way to know is to remove cover.

Mr. mcmopar, I am 3000 miles from n. carolina in Burbank, CA, or I would gladly pay you to do it for me. Thanx a million for the offer (when I was still in the farming community I grew up in there was always someone willing to help etc., but not here in L.A>...most of them..you DON't want their help.

But if you are coming to see Jay Leno Tonight's Show, I live about 3 blocks from there, call me first and I'll talk you into doing it for me (I've got nearly every automotive tool known to man...almost). My wife used to have connections for VIP tickets, but I'm not sure if she still does.

After doing quite a few searches on this site and others, I am leaning toward ordering the JIG kit. I've had some background in machine shop, and it seems to me that (if the jig kit is going what I "think" it does) the jig kit is probably a better fix.....it's just that it no longer "appears" original from the outside, and that is a no-no for a lot of people.

That works well for many people, I have always been the "Doubting Thomas" so I need to see the pin for myself!! If yours has fallen out, you won't know until you have the case shift on you (I am not saying that it WILL move). If you try to drill and the drill bit won't go in all the way your pin has come partway out and you will need to remove the cover anyway. That's partly why I just remove the cover!! I was not trying to be a smart___, I did not realize you lived in CA, I guess I never looked . Good luck with it.

Now that I have calmed down and got the beast back togeather I feel better. The timing case seal was seeping so it wasn't a complete waste of time. I just hope I did the seal right.

Infidel, you know what you are talking about, but I'm amazed mine had the "new" style with such an early "98" engine build date.

Live & learn.

Sorry, I took it apart without the kit. You can make your own tab thing if you need to. I just downloaded the instructions from the kit web site and went at it. It was 50 degrees here today so I wanted to get r dun while it was warm.

You just had to do it to me. I had finally primed myself to do this after all the indesision and then you come along, now I'm wondering again. I'm not quit so gentle natured as you are, I get this apart and find there was no problem I'd probably end breaking somethin else just so it wasn't a waste of time.

OK,
as far as "out of the old cases by then"

I believe they put these motors together in more than one place, and who knows where or which plant changed over to the new ones soonest??I sure don't....Unless they cast them all over the place but then put the parts all together in the same place, So I'm not sure that line of reasoning would pass.
I wish I knew more about their manufacturing.

I've heard of some instances where (not necessarily dodge/cummins) there were old parts floating around for up to 10 years at some mfg. facilities, and they would just grab one of the old ones (when they were out...or waiting for new ones) and stick it in there to keep the line going and the cash flowing...got to make the stats...ya know..

I remember in 1968, the gibson guitar factory just wanted to get rid of some guitar necks they had made in 1959, so they made a couple hundred les pauls that year just to get rid of all the old parts....And then that made them popular again and they started their line up with all new parts by sometime 1969 mid-year. To this date they are still making them, but the old parts were all used up the first year or two.
