99 kdp fix

How many of you '99's needed the kdp fixed? Just bought used 99 and didn't think the kdp was an issue on 24v's.

I'm in the same boat. I've read several posts where the 99 is "exempt" from the KDP, then several posts that say the 99 was the change year and you might have it and might not.

I hate to think I've gone 180K miles with no problems.... am I safe?

Does anybody know if you can check engine serial number to see for sure?? Surley, they serialized the change to keep track of a new cover.

Good thread Cin.

The number to look for is the Part # on the front cover. Even though I can tell you this is what needs to be checked for I have been unsuccesfull at getting anybody to tell me there cover numbers and if it was an updated cover when they checked. I know that alot of people who are just using the jig method are just drilling through already updated covers and fixing what doesn't need fixing. I have asked these questions many times of people with 99's that say they have fixed them with no real answers. 1. When you pulled the front cover off your 99 was it an updated cover?
2. What was the part number off the metal tag mounted to it? With this info, IMO we could narrow down how to tell the differance without pulling them apart.

If you call a dealership with a part number can they tell you if it has been updated or not?

Any dealership I have ever dealt with would be doin good to know what the front cover was. The ones that do know these trucks are usually pretty tight lipped with there knowledge.

Did a dealer tell you it was an updated cover and where did you find the number on your cover?

This is the engine number. Mine is the same number. If you have this number for your engine are you safe?

There is a tag plate on the timing case on the driver side just under the black throttle linkage box. The tag is on the case part it self, it is a piece of aluminum about 1 1/4 thick on the front, you can see it by stabding on the driver side looking over the battery. It has a few things written on it and the says part number, i imagine thats the number for the case. No i wasnt told from a dealer, They dont touch my truck. I found out by goin in to do the kdp tab myself. When i was in there it didnt look like the case i have seen in pictures so i talked to wannadiesel and some one else and its the updated case. There is no way to visually tell unless you take the cover of. to do the tab procedure. But if some one can find out it the part number holds some truth to the change over of the case then there you go.

The other thing I would be interested in is the engine production date. Maybe we could also pin down exactly when they ran out of the old covers.

I have the same number as Cin, 53040201AB engine build date is 01-08-1999. The difference in the engine number so far is just the last number 1 and 2.
