Dad has a 99 CTD 4*4 with the four speed auto +OD. Yesturday, I was driving it and the motor was warm. i stopped at the store for about ten minutes, started the truck back up.

i rode down the road and the truck would not shift into second. I stopped at the light, and the transmission would shift into neutral, reverse, park and then back down into drive without any problem.

light turns green, truck is in first taking off and never shifts into second. so its time to check the fluid.

it was low, filled it up and it ran fan the rest of the day.

reoccuring problem....

this morning, it will not shift out of first gear again. I checked the fluid and its still at the full mark.

so what causes this? what should be checked before having it towed in to the shop. I have the haynes book, but for the auto trans, it just says....TAKE IT TO THE DEALER!! hehe, thats not what i bought the book for.

 

How many miles are on this tranny? Also, you might want see if there are any codes. Take it to an Auto Zone (or dealer).

if there were any codes, wouldn't the check engine light be on or something else maybe, hinting that there was a trouble code?

Probably the transmission output shaft speed sensor ....
