Question What mph does your 97' 12valve auto shift out of first

My truck shifts out of first at about 3 mph into second. I think that it shifts early out of every gear. It also locks the TC up in overdrive at about 45mph. I think this is the reason that i am only getting 15.6 mpg too This is on normal acceleration.

Does anybody know what would fix this or if this is normal?

Thanks Adam

I believe factory setting for the torq convertor to lock up in OD is around 45 - 48 mph under normal aceleration. Mine dont shift at that speed as I have a built trans for my 96,, and also have the pont on my tps.. so mine usually shifts and locks up in OD at around 55 mph

I dont think mine even uses first unless i manually pull the shifter down. Really, it seems like it never wants to use first unless i tell it to.

It depends on how much throttle you give it. OD lock is at 48 mph on mine under easy throttle. 45 mph lockup sounds a tad bit low. If you're getting 15.6 mpg in the city, I'd say that's actually very good mileage!

Mine shifted quickly into second. Most do. Also, locking the T/C at about 45 sounds right. It is a product of tightening regulations around fuel economy and Dodge's claims to said fuel economy.

Now, there are no diesels in the full size market that will touch a 12V for fuel economy. I went to the beach last Wednesday for Thanksgiving and came home on the same tank of fuel. I went about 740 miles and will only need 32-33 gallons to refill. (over 21 M.P.G.)

My truck has always gotten good fuel economy considering the power output and it's size.

If it was shifting early it will help you mpg around town, less rpm=less fuel.
The best thing to do is get a better converter w/a lower stall speed.

Hmm I think I may have a problem mine seems to shift much quicker than most. I hit lock up third at around 35 miles per hour always has. It's a real pain when towing or hauling a load. Somone told me the only way to fix this is a reflash of the computer? Anyone know??

It seems like it shifts at 3 mph then sits there forever just slipping the torque convertor. I put it into first then shift out at about 15 into second and it seems like it is alot quicker even under normal acceleration. Is it all because the torque convertor stock is only like 63% effecient and an aftermarket on is 93%.

What can i change to make it shift out of first at around 12-15 and see if my mpg changes?

Thanks Adam

You can tighten the tv adjust screw (clockwise). Try 1/2 a turn at first and tighten it more if you have to. The screw delays upshifts under light throttle. The difference between 1st and 2nd is little and the stock tc is so inefficient that you won't notice a difference in mpg. I can hardly even notice when it goes from 1st to 2nd.

1998 12-valve

My 1998 12-valve acts just like what you are describing. It shifts out of 1st gear really quickly and the converter usually locks at around 45 mph under normal acceleration. I just dropped it off today to get a good triple-disk converter put in. Also, the tranny shop is gonna build me a performance valve body. I will let you know how this turns out.

Where might i find the TV screw and what exactly does it stand for and what does it do to make it shift later

When i put it into 1st then go to about 15 and shift it seems alot quicker under normal acceleration. Could it be bad that if i shift it manually alot?

Thanks for the help

I don't know what it stands for. Throttle valve? It's on your valvebody. My memory is a little hazy but I believe it's this screw:

I've noticed when I shift manually it shifts harder too. So I don't do it too often. Not sure if it's ok...
