600 mile tow had 2 issues

I own a show/race vw that I towed (if anyone is familiar) over the grapevine with one issue going and one issue comming. My truck is an automatic and has almost 90,000 miles, I towed a flatbed and the vw up the a 6% grade hill for about 15 miles and it towed it flawlessly, about 65 miles per hour uphill with the truck kicking down a gear only twice for about a minute each time. Going down the back-side of the climb, I honestly coasted about 10 minutes at 65 -70 miles per hour down hill(in gear). When everything evened out ,back to flatland, after the coast, when I accelerated it shot out thick white smoke for about 10 seconds, so I pulled over not knowing what it was, I revved the motor and it smoked allittle then went away, running excellent the entire time, and never came back for the duration of the 350 miles left driving under the same conditiones. What Happened???? The second issue was when cruising home 2 days later, same way, climbed and coasted down the hill flawlessly, towards the end of the trip, almost home, the truck satrted to loose power around 60 miles per hour so I would have to give it a little extra gas to step down a gear, and everything went back to normal, for about 20 minutes. I would have to do that every 20 minutes or so. All temps and pressure was where it usually is. Is that dead-pedal, if so do I have to take it to a shop?? Thanks guys, this site is a big help as I am fairly new to diesels. Lovin the DODGE though!!!

Usually, the 0216 means a check will be written to your local VP44 supplier...
