4x4 busted!

Hey guys, im new to the page, been doing lots of reading though since buying my first dodge a couple weeks ago. Now i have a problem with my 4x4 it started with once in a while when i worked it hard in the snow it slipped out of 4x4 and grinds, let off the feeder and it would go right back into 4x4, anways now it wont work at all just grinds right away. Maybe the CAD? Hope its not gears in the front diff. Any thoughts?
Thanks guys!

welcome, fill out your sig, so we can know what'cha got. If you have an older 2nd gen, the front axle may have a vacuum disconnect, which could be a culprit. Do you know if its grinding in the transfer case, or in the front axle?

mines doing the same thing the collar in the transfer case dosent engage all the way and it holds for a turn then slips and repeats.

Could be the shift collar on the CAD not moving all the way over, or it could just be a twitch worn out. Pull the CAD apply vacuum, and look for free movement of the shift fork. Also check the vacuum lines to the CAD for leakage. This could cause an intermittent problem.

Good Luck

It's what you develop after too much psychological warfare ( 5 years of marriage or so )

Just a bit worn, the outboard end of the splines could be starting to wear on either the collar or the axle.

Just use a vacuum source to check the CAD, I am not sure on the exact spec for vacuum down there. Perhaps J-Body or someone can speak up on that subject.
