47RE Transmission Failure
I bought the truck used, but the previous owner swore that he replaced the tranny fluid regularly – the mechanic at his dad’s large-scale landscaping business changed it for him. I’m guessing that he used the same tranny fluid that they had in bulk for the big Cats, and never adjusted the bands. After I installed the Banks equipment, I noticed the transmission was slipping between gear shifts – especially if I was stepping into it. In the hopes of getting it to last another year, I just backed out of the throttle to keep it from slipping. After searching and reading past threads regarding members with similar problems, I replaced the filter, adjusted the bands (per the inch-pound specs on this site), and filled it up with ATF +3 fluid. Wow, what a difference in how it performed! It never slipped between shifts, and definitely produced faster take-offs.
While coming back from my Nephew’s birthday party yesterday, I went to go around a slow moving vehicle while going up a moderate hill. Heard and felt a “clunk” coming from the transmission, and then lost all power. I pulled off onto the shoulder and tried shifting into all the gears, including reverse. I even tried shifting the transfer case into 4-Low. Absolutely nothing! This is the first time I’ve ever had a transmission completely drop out on me and didn’t act like it was even trying. Any ideas on what broke? I plan on calling Goerend Brothers later this week, but appreciate any suggestions on what to check.

I would suspect a shaft broke.
Will it hold in park? If so, then the input shaft broke. If not, the out put shaft.
Any power adder---even a banks kit--------- will overpower the stock auto. Don't blame the seller.

Thanks for replying j-fox. It does hold while in Park. I've read about people installing heavy duty billet shafts, but couldn't find anyone writing about breaking a shaft except in sled pulling situations. There is so much information on this site, it's hard to come up with the correct search criteria (and the time to read through it all).
I didn't mean to blame the previous owner. He told me the fluid was changed a month earlier, and made it very clear that he didn't service his own vehicle. I'm only guessing that his dad's shop mechanic didn't have/use the correct type of transmission fluid and never adjusted the bands. Both, according to what I've read, could cause the clutches to slip (only reason for mentioning it in my initial post). I also knew that adding power could cause slippage and/or failure -- that was my choice and risk. Instead of waiting for the normal service interval, I decided to perform the work myself and make sure everything was done correctly -- hoping it would help. It did eliminated the slippage. Unfortunately, curing one ailment caused another to show up...
