47RE durability questions
47RE durability questions
OK- I've heard and read about all the troubles with the 47RE especially when towing. My 01 (completely stock) only has 33K on it and I regularly tow a 10K tag trailer. The truck pulls it fine, I know when to lock out OD (it seems most people don't) and I have never had ANY problems of any kind with this truck. I will be making SEVERAL cross country trips with this set up and I'm wondering whether or not to upgrade the trans now or wait till it goes south. You guys have any thoughts? ....And yes I have all the necessary guages, I have never had ANY overheating from the motor or trans. And last- does this trans tend to go all at once or will it start giving warning signs like my old TH400 that went over 200K and never left me stranded?
My trans has 95K on it and over 60K of that was with an Edge Ez on it. Last october I installed injectors and now I can drive through the lockup clutch in the torque convertor (I've had my "spare" trans built and sitting in the garage for three months now....to dang busy to get it installed). Biggest "weak" part of the 47re is probably the torque convertor. You'll know when it's giving up as you will feel it "shudder" as it slips if you are pulling a grade with a load and trans is in lockup. That said I changed a trans in a customers 2000 today. He had some long cross country trips coming up and thought it was just time to do it. Just rolled 340,000 on the odometer. I did pull the pan out of curiousity and the magnet was pretty fuzzy and there was alot of endplay. This was the original trans and he does tow with the truck. Not sure how much though.
thanks for the replies...I change fluid every 20K on all my vehicles and have had very good luck with all my autos. I think I'll just run it till I have problems or at least 100K on it then upgrade.

....and on a side note,
HOW...HOW can you stand towing a trailer with that truck in stock configuration?
My 28' race trailer only weighs 10K and my stocker will pull just about any hill in Drive. This truck out pulls my buddies 99 CTD that is straight piped, with a smarty. It also out pulls my 8.1 gasser big block GMC. Maybe I just got one of the "good ones". I hesitate to modify it because it has been completely trouble free and pulls my trailer with ease.
