3500 Dually Problems
Hello Everyone
This is my first post ,but have been a member for quite a while. I have to Dodge Rams 01 2500 diesel and a recently purchased 00 3500. I seem to be having problems with the auto transmission shifting in and out at 45 to 50 mph. Thought it was the APPS so got out my voltmeter and reset it as per forum instructions, but didn't help. The fellow I bought the truck from said he just replaced the apps with one he purchased at Autozone. Also my truck seems to have a large amout of black smoke come out the exhaust upon accleration. It does not have the check engine light coming on. Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Thanks

my 99 had that problem at 45 to 50, i added 2 grounds from the left battery to the apps, from the right battery to the PCM and installed the noise filter from DTT.
problem over until the battery cables need a good cleaning, they must be absolutely free of any corrosion, be sure someone did not over tighten the post clamps and deformed the lead (the cable ends at the battery) and pinch the gap shut and it is not actually pinching the posts on the battery even though the bolts are tight.
you can move your apps wire out of the harness, get that wire away from the alternator where the electrical noise interference comes from.

there is a black wire with a brown stripe on the alternator you can wrap with aluminum foil, i have never had to do it, i guess it works?
i copied and pasted a discussion from another forum about this very same issue your having, here's what someone had to say about this:
Noise filters, shielding, APPS rewire, etc are just bandaids on the real problem. It might work for a month, a year but eventually it will return either consistently or intermittently.
The only real solution is to remove the source of the noise causing the signal interference. The interference is from the alternator charge wire or passenger side battery ground wire that runs to the ECU. The noise caused by age of the components and just normal running eventually interferes with the APPS signal that is processed and sent to the PCM.
Cutting those 2 wires and rerouting them is the single best solution I have found. Run the charge wire over the rad support and the ground wire on the firewall to their respective termination points. If that doesn't cure the problem its time to look at PCM, trans control harness and possibly VB and\or TC as the root cause.
Dodge's fix was cut the APPS wiring out of the existing harness to separate it but removing the other 2 wires is much simpler.

Don't have a boost gage. Cleaned up the battery connects and wrapped the alternator wire with aluminum a/c duct tape. Ran it down the road and it ran perfect. Still has a large amount of black smoke on acceleration.

Thanks for your help will check the hoses tomorrow, also air filter looks really dirty ,just got back from another drive with it and it ran great again. I'll let you know about the hoses tomorrow.
Thanks
