3 Gallons of Oil

Yesterday when I changed my oil I just put 3 gallons instead of the normal 2 1/2 gallons. How many of yall run 3 gallons? Is this a mistake on my part for doing this?

Ran mine for years that way. Have to now as the air compressor takes about a quart so the level is normal after running. It is not 2 1/2 anyway, it is two gallons and three quarts to fill it. You have put one quart too much in in. The oil pan holds 2 1/2 the filter holds one quart. The dip stick tubes are not accurate.

Thanks for the feedback, I thought I had remembered you running 3 gallons before but wasn't sure.

Thanks again

I run 3 gallons as well. I can only get Delo 400 in gallon jugs. So rather that just keeping that 3rd jug with a quart left in it, I just put it in the motor.

So you guys are filling over the dip stick mark,,,,, doesnt the crank shaft start haveing to splash through the oil at some point?

Thats always been a no no , loss of power , oil spashing around etc in other motors.

Im new to these cummins am I missing something or are you guys over filling and not knowing it aint a good idea?

The little bit extra oil will not hurt this engine. I always fill the oil filter to the top, and add the rest of the 3 gallons (U.S.) and the oil level is always on the full mark

I also dont think an extra quart makes a big difference. Take a look at the size of the oil pan. How far up do you think a quart of oil would raise the oil level? A 1/4" at most? If the crank is only a 1/4" away from the oil to begin with it would slap it silly, creating a foamy mess.
