Re:3.55 swap 4.10 gears

4:10s are probably a little better for hauling heavy loads or for getting off the line quicker... 3:55s probably give you better mpg and better cruising rpms on the highway.
BUTTTT
IMHO, if your truck pulls fine now and you're not doing any racing I would keep what you've got. It would cost quite a bit of $$ to get your gears pulled out and have the others installed. Not to mention if there is anything wrong with the 4:10 gears. Then you get stuck buying a new replacement set and paying once again to uninstall and reinstall.....Not worth the hassle unless you really don't like the 3:55s.

Re:3.55 swap 4.10 gears

I think most of the guys on this site would not do the swap regardless of if they currently have 3:55s or 4:10s. Both groups seem happy with what they have and as I stated before, the potential gain is not worth the hassle.....
Did you ask the cattle their opinion?? They may not have liked you tearing off the line with the 4:10s and knocking them on their butts....

Had one with 4:10 pulled great uphill then it would also go only so fast. This one now has 3:55 and it pulls great. I have had upto 28k on it and it pulled fine. If I hit a hill I just downshift. basic point you prabably would not have liked the 4:10 gearing

Have you ever heard anyone complain that these trucks don't have enough low end performance? I certainly haven't, but I have often wished I had another gear on top.

For my liking 4.10's might have a place with an auto, but I have no use for them with a stick.

My .02

Cheers

Re:3.55 swap 4.10 gears

I finally came to rules of thumb on rear ratios:

All autos should have 4.11 gears, so the obnoxious 0.69 OD ratio is usable.

All 3500s/1 tons should have 4.11 gears, they work harder. If you are not loading the 1 ton, you should have a 2500.

The 2500/ 3/4 ton can have 3.54, 3.73, or 4.11 gears, whatever makes the owner happy.

Re:3.55 swap 4.10 gears

My vote is for the 3:55's. I refer my diesel to operate on torque instead of horsepower. Once you are into the hp, things die off pretty quickly. if you are running out of steam with the auto in OD, lockup manully and press the OD off button. I think that gives you about the same as the 4:10's.

With the 4:10's the gearing is often too low in snowy or muddy situations, especially in reverse.
Just what I think.
george
I'll be different. ;D

I like the 4:10's in my 2500. The 3:55's seem a little guttless after driving my truck. Now if they would have offered a 3:73 I would have jumped all over that one, but they weren't smart enough to do that. :

Darrell

IMO if going to the expense and trouble of changing out the rear (and front) differential ratio, I would use all new high quality components especially Dana ring and pinion set(s). Best bet is to live the ratio you have and save a lot of money. ;D

Re:3.55 swap 4.10 gears

I have the 3.55's and I recently added 35 inch tires, now Im really dragging. Would it make sense to switch up to 4:10 gears to correct my power, mileage and speedo issues? (It would also be a a nice excuse to get those mag-hytec covers for christmas )

I was thinking of more of when my truck was stock, but since you brought it up why not. ;D

I think i'm a little out Horse Powered. :'( :'(

But that's gonna change after I get that clutch.
