265/75/16 spare w/285/75/16's?

Hi all,
So I upgraded from 265/75/16's to 285/75/16's today. I'm sitting on my couch thinking about how sweet they look and it occurs to me that I only have a 265 spare . No big deal I'll get a used 285. But then I realized I don't think a 285 will fit up there Anyone know for sure if a 285 will fit in the carrier area? Or is it ok to have a slightly different size spare? Obviously small cars have donuts but I don't know if thats ok for a heavy duty truck with solid axles...

I am thinking getting a 285 to go where the spare goes might be really close.
I would not worry to much as long as you don't expect it to get you home long distances with the 4x4 engaged.
I try not to run mis matched tires on a limited slip rear axle for any distance though.
The smaller spare could easily work on the front end in 2wd.

Ok thanks for the info! I think I am going to try to get a 285 in the spare carrier...I would really like one for the peace of mind and I'd hate to get a flat in a snow storm and not have 4x4....I know it's going to be tight because I think my 265 already rides agains my 4" exhaust but we'll see how it goes I guess...if it won't fit under there at all then I'll just throw it in the bed

A 285 fits with a 4" single pipe. It you have duals...not a chance.

Now, I carry mine on-board anyway, as it would get way too ugly being underneath. I did try it,just to see if it would go though.

Somewhat related question, but do you have a limited slip differential in the rear axle?

If so, you'll want to carry a matching spare.

Never mix tire sizes or tread patterns. It's an accident waiting to happen. Been there and paid the price. Even my winter spare matches, less the studs.

Yes I do have a limited slip rear diff, so I know I can't put a different size on that axle for sure. Also I know I asked this in another thread but I'm trying to get as much info as possible, does anyone see any problem with running the 285/75/16's with 3:55's? I bought my truck with 285's but switched to 265's because that's what the build sheet says it came with. But then I had a warranty issue and decided to go back to the 285's because there is plenty of room and I like the way they look and I was thinking they might help my fuel mileage a little....but I didn't think about the gearing and if it would hurt anything....

You won't hurt the gears or axle with 285's. Do check and see if you have a limited slip though (sticker inside glove box)

I don't know if a 285 will fit between the frame rails or not on the spare tire carrier. If you are stuck with a 265 spare you can still make it work with the other 4 being 285's. In this case, if your rear axle gets a flat, move a good front tire to the back and put the 265 spare up front. That way you will have 285's on the rear axle. This is assuming you have a limited slip diff.

ok cool thanks! I do have a limited slip according to the build sheet. I won't put a 265 on the rear axle. Im not sure if a 285 will fit in the spare carrier either, I plan to try and if not just throw it in the bed.
