The Cooper's have the severe snow RMA rating, so do the Blizzaks. These tires are super soft and grippy with tons of tiny sipes and will not compare to any AT in the snow/ice.

"500 lbs in the bed over the axle". Even better than over the axle is as far back as possible. If you can get the 500 lbs a foot and a half behind the rear axle, not only will you have the extra 500lbs on the axle, you will also transfer some of the weight from the front axle to the rear axle.

Winter Traction
Live in the Snow Belt of NY. 1200# of sand back by the tail gate. Use a 2x8 to hold it there. I also air down to about 40-45psi. If I had 20# of pressure the rims would be destroyed.
Using Cooper M/S tires, I can go up almost all mountain passes without too much trouble. Truck remains balanced and has good control.
Without the weight, the truck will get stuck in <1" of snow.
