2002 cummins starting weird

i got a buddy whos got a 2002 cummins with a dump bed on it and when its cold and he goes to start it almost chugs itself and smokes white like crazy what could it be leaky injector or any ideas help thnks

Most likely cause would be malfunctioning grid heaters

If the grid heaters work then check for codes. Is the IAT (intake air temp) sensor OK? If so try cleaning it.
