2001 No fuel to injection pump
2001 No fuel to injection pump
Last week I drove my 2001 Dodge with an automatic and bone stock to my Moms house to pick up a sandblast cabinet. I had almost made it to her house when the truck died. Truck has 143000 miles on it and I usually drive my Jetta TDI so it has pretty well sat in the garage since Fall. At first I thought it had run out of fuel since it had about 405 miles on the tank. Put some fuel in it cracked the three injectors and mostly bubbles but at times I would get some fuel. Figured that the lift pump had went out so put a Fass pump on this weekend and still the same thing. I have the tank almost full of fuel now plus a new fuel filter. Worked on the truck most of the weekend and still no joy. Took the rubber line off between the filter and injection pump and all I get is a drip of fuel. Any ideas what the problem could be? Lines from the tank to the lift pump are not kinked and I see no leaks. Could it be some sort of blockage in the tank? I do not know what to check next. When I bump the starter I can hear the lift pump run. Thanks for any assistance.
What did the filter look like?
Was it black and slimely?
If so, I suspect algea.
I have had it several times.
Low fuel, temps just right and some moisture it grows fast.
It can plug up lines and filrets.
What I'd suggest is this.
Remove the hose from the VP again.
Take fuel cap off and wrap an air hose with a rag and pressureise the tank.
Don'r do overboard.
30-40 psi should easily push fuel thru the system.

In tank pump? If so you need to get a non intank lp fuel module for it or modify the in tank one....
Did you prime the FASS with wd40 or other?
Mine took a few attempts to get the air out...

The system is acting just like when it quit me after about an hour drive. Will give the vacuum pump a try but wonder if there is a problem in the tank since I know the truck was getting low on fuel. I usually try to run on the top half of the tank but this time I did not since I was in a hurry. The ten minutes it would have taken to fuel up might have been worth it since I have about eight hours invested now. Anyone know it I also have a pump in the tank since there are four wires going into the connector? Service manual only shows two or the extra two just part of the standard wiring harness.

So if I am to understand your post, truck died, and you installed a FASS lift pump? Am I correct? Your truck is bone stock? When you installed the new FASS pump, did you remove the "in-tank pump" and install a "draw straw"?
I think on your later post you said something about the in tank pump. remove your fuel cap, bump your starter, and listen for an in tank pump operation for about 20 seconds. If you did not remove the in take pump and install a draw straw, do so. Any aftermarket electric fuel pump is more efficent pushing fuel then sucking fuel. That is why it is recomended to install it as close to the tank as possable. Last thing, remove the fuel line starting at the discharge port of the Fass, and check the volume of fuel flow, then move down stream untill you get to the VP44. If you get good fuel flow up to the VP 44, then try bleeding the following cylinders, #1, #3. #5. One at a time. Should you get a trickle of fuel at the injectors instead of a good stream of fuel, most likely the VP44. If no codes, She should run. Good Luck. Hope this helps.

Round 7
Overnight left it on the charger. This morning I jumped it to our Jeep. It cranked enthusiastically and after about 8 seconds it started to "fire". So I stopped cranking after 10 secs, waited a minute and tried it again. It "fired" for about 5 seconds or so and then went back to just cranking. So I did the starter bump check of the bleed valve and air bubbles came out with the fuel. I bled it again several times and at first fuel only would come out and then air bubbles for the last 5 seconds or so. I tried starting it again and had the same results as the first time today. I seem so me that it has to be sucking air in from somewhere I am thinking about putting more fuel in the tank, but if I have to pull the tank again to check the lift module that would make it a little more difficult.
