2000 24 valve Help need Please

I have a buddy with a 2000 24 valve. When he starts it up cold it runs fine first hit of the throttle but then it runs like a dog. After it warms it runs better but not right. He took it to a Diesel shop and they said he needed a new Lift Pump and Injection pump. they said the Injection pump was ruined because of Fuel starvation. Is this true? Does he just need a lift pump? any help is greatly appreciated.

The shop is probably right. Since the fuel flow is about the only cooling the VP gets, when the LP goes, there is over heating and failure. VP's are also know to fail without LP problems.
This is THE reason that even trucks with no modes need a FP gauge. I'm still amazed that these trucks don't come with one from the factory.

Crobtex is right. Tell your friend to get a FP guage ASAP. More than likely the IP & LP are shot.

I agree with both of you...

FP guage is a must for all 2nd gen trucks...

So if he was gonna sell the truck do you think just a Lift pump would get it by?
Seems funny that it would run real good at times and not at others. I guess I mean if the Lift pump works better sometimes then others would it not run that way? If the IP is trashed wouldent it run crappy all the time?
If in fact it needs both How much do they run Price wise and are they hard to install?
Thank you.

You are looking at 12-1500 for a injection pump, and around 175 for a L/P from Cummins, 350 from Dodge. Not too hard to install, but you have to know what you are doing, and have a few special tools. You should have a trouble code if the injection pump is bad, and yes, it should run crappy all the time if it's bad, but not always.

Have you had the codes read? If it's the IP, you will probably get an 0215.
