2000 Cummins Stuck on the side of the road Help Please..

2000 Cummins Stuck on the side of the road Help Please..
My buddy is calling me with the following codes. He said he was driving and it just started sputtering and shut off. He cycled the key and got the following codes.
P1694 No bus message received from ECM Mod
P1693 DTC detected in the Companion JTC Mod
P1687 No cluster BUS message.
What can i tell him to do to limp the truck back home? Currently he is disconnecting the batterys and letting the truck clear the memory in the ECU. Is there anything else he could try?
He is stuck with the baby in the car too. I think someone is on there way to pickup the baby soon. But it's still only 31 degrees here today.

EDIT: Sounds like a computer fart - but it could be an error in the EPROM code - was it flashed?

I don't know nothing about the truck other than it's bone stock. He actually ran it out of fuel. The gauge read 1/4 tank and but it was wrong and he actually just out of fuel. He filled it up and off he went. Thanks for the help though guys. I was trying to diagnose it over the phone.
