1999 Bad Tranny ???

trans was locked in first gear and wouldn't shift. Was told to replace the speed sensor. After doing so transmission shifted well for about 4 days, 500 or so miles. Now, when driving on the highway, it keeps shifting in and out of overdrive. Do you think i might need an OEM sensor than an aftermarket it this is what the problem is???

Click Here for a "NO-COST" simple procedure that may help out. It has helped some folks who had shifting problems. If it doesn't help, maybe someone else can chime in with other ideas.

Oh yeah,,,,,,,,,,, Welcome to the site! ;D

Re:1999 Bad Tranny ???

jjsj38 - I had the same problem - hunting between high gear (auto trans) & OD under light acceleration @ approx. 40mph.

Suggestions to fix ranged from resetting APPS, that worked for 3 days for me then returned to hunting, to cleaning battery posts, electrical "noise" to checking all connections and specifically the ground wires.

Well, I found a disconnected ground strap on the firewall, cleaned my battery posts, 1 did have a little corrosion, and re-checked electrical plugs.

Now, it's been almost a week and NO more hunting.

Loved the "cost" of that solution, it just amazes me of the seemingly unrelated solutions to the problems, like cleaning the battery posts to fix a tranny shifting problem. I guess I should say, seemingly unrelated to the un-initiated. Oh well, as I said, loved the price and I would never have thought of these steps without the valuable info presented on boards such as this.

Jerry.

Well, it started locking and unlocking again on a 50 mile trip with the air on. I read on another thread to swap the transmission relay with the fog lights relay to see what happens. I'll copy the post and put it on here.

This is from another post where someone had this problem. I swiped the text of that post and saved it. Maybe it will be the solution to your problem also.

Dodge Converter Lockup Problem
Solution:
2weeks ago I'm going ice fishing and the tc locks up like normal-then suddenly unlocks-then locks, then unlocks-never had a problem with truck B4 but now it won't stay locked.Otherwise shifts perfect;so I start reading and asking questions-dealers,mitchells,internet,etc.My best bets are:APPS,solenoids, computer, wiring, possibly governor pressure, but then find an article in GEARS magazine about 47re trannys which mentions(barely)the TRANSMISSION RELAY!!-It's in the fuse box-I switched it with the relay marked fog lights-BINGO-PROBLEM SOLVED

I tried all of the above, and they worked for a while. I ended up ordering a "noise filter" from DTT and that solved the problem for good. You can get a noise filter from Radio Shack, but I am not sure of the "size." If you want to go the Radio Shack route, PM me and I will try to find the literature.

Im an electronics Idiot, just where do you install that filter? My 99 is having the OD hunting problem right now. I am going to try the reflash in the morning, and see if that helps
