Red face 0216 - clearing - again

I searched but can't hit the right search. Can you guys remind me if the 0216 will clear itself, and when? I put in a remanufactured VP44 and checked the codes the next day, still getting P1693 and P0216 twice, same exact codes I had before VP replacement. Do they have to be cleared or will they go away? Or, is my new VP messed up?

The P0216 code should reset with the new VP44. Here is what sets this code:

Engine speed > 300 RPM
Fuel command > 5 mm^3 per stroke (this is what the ECM is requesting for injection)
Timing command must fall within a certain window. (No info given on this window)

Theory of operation:
This test is performed in the fuel pump module. There is a closed loop control of timing. This test looks at the error between the commanded timing and the actual timing as measured as measured by the fuel pump’s position sensor. If the timing is outside a certain window for 8 seconds, the fuel pump control module sets status bit 08. The engine control module requires status bit 08 to be set for 5 seconds and the timing command to be within a certain window before it stores the DTC code (P0216).

Possible causes:
Incorrect calibration of the ECM
Multiple DTC’s set, (P0336, P1287, or P1690)
Restriction in the lift pump inlet

The above boilerplate comes from the Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures manual and it does not say the P0216 code gets reset after some number of starts. It does say the code is set if there is a problem.

I have read that if the timing key on the VP is installed backwards (arrow should point towards pump) or the wrong key was used this timing code will be set. It is also possible that when the ECM looks at the crank timing sensor behind the starter, and it disagrees with the fuel pump module the code is set.

I am guessing when I say the VP may have been installed incorrectly and the timing code will not reset on its own.

Thanks for the input! I am positive the key is in correct position, in fact it is not that easy to get out and I left it as it came from the rebuilder, with arrow towards the pump. I am convinced that at least that part of the installation is correct as I had a very good view of the key and its slot. The truck is working well, and the combination of the DTCs is the same as before I replaced the pump, this is what is making me suspicious that the 216 requires a number of engine heat cycles to clear. I searched here more and found one post that seems to think 5 cycles are needed, but I have nothing to confirm.

If the codes were not cleared you are looking at "stored" codes. They will remain in the ECM even after a pump is installed. No light, no drivablity issues.....no worries.

A simple 5 minute battery disconnection used to clear stored codes. I've been using a code reader for so long that I don't know if that old trick will work to clear the memory.

Thanks guys, I am just being paranoid. There are no driveability issues. I will try to get a scanner to clear them, or maybe find someone around here with a Smarty.
The battery disconnect did not clear the codes, I had the batteries off for good 9 hours while I was working on the truck.

The code also cleared in my case with a certain number of uneventful restarts. Not sure what the number is but when my first vp failed the code cleared a couple of times before it was diagnosed and replaced. My only symptom was poor mileage and I was a long way from home. My dealer just told me "if the oil pressure is ok and it is running fine keep driving it. We will check it when you get back." By the time I returned the cel was off and didn't reset until I went back through Klamath Falls Oregon. It did it twice and I was convinced that there are evil spirits there or something!!

Thanks!
I had a guy with a sporty car with nitrous injection reset it for me. He was very helpful and was glad to give me a hand. After restart, the DTC did not reappear; I will re-check after some more driving. But I guess you ought to reset it using an OBD tool, after all. My code was there still after 4 days of driving, restarts etc.
