01 lift pump woes

My 01 diesel now has 110,000 miles on and the 3rd lift pump has just took the dirt nap. Since it is now off warranty and will not be covered by dodge I am thinking about having the Dodge relocation kit installed. Is the Dodge kit a quality peace or would I be better served by somehting else?

Contact Eric at www.vulcanperformance.com he'll fix you up!

I am in the same boat as you and advise that you opt for an aftermarket LP. The Carter OEM pumps are junk and there also seems to be a problem with the ECM sending the correct voltage to the pump. Bypass the ECM and run your pump from a relay if you're going to stick with the OEM or going to a Holley or similar. I believe the FASS pumps come with the appropriate harness to do this.

If you can't get it fixed to your satisfaction, you can join me in LAW missile launching practice in the desert ... BYOT (bring your own truck)!

Thanks for the replys guys. Couple of questions though. If the stock Carter pump has such a high failure rate what will moving it back to the tank do? I can see the load being reduced some because the "suck" distance is less, but if the pump is unreliable to start with I have hard time believeing that simply moving it will do anything but prolong the time between failures. I want some thing that will not fail.
Have you guys been happy with the FASS and is there a place in Canada to order from.

...and the counterpoint. I would never put a Holley blue on a vehicle I had to depend on. I've seen too many people walking around the pit area looking for a spare or parts for a blue. I ran one back in the dark ages and had probs with it. I only needed it to last 10 seconds and a trip back to the pit area and it let me down. Of course if you want a pump you can hear over your engine the blue is for you.

I wouldn't say the stock LP is not good but pumps like this aren't designed to pull they should be fed. So putting the pump back by the tank usally below it gives the pump a positive head pressure or being fed. the pump will last a lot longer running like this.

I agree. To me, the Walbro looks like the way to go, also the electric lift pumps on the Superduty trucks are amazingly reliable. They would both need to be regulated, but there are kits available. My truck however is a 12 valve, so I don't get to do any real-world testing.

Amen.

Check the motor temperature on a Holley Blue after it's been running 10 or 15 minutes. I've only ever got 5 or 6 months of use out of a Holley before the armature was wore out, or the bearings siezed. One, lasted only a week before the motor was running erratic and the fuel pressure was bouncing all over the place. Not good for the long haul.

The Carter pump is superior, the motor is cooled by the fuel flow, and it lasts much better when moved off the engine.

Recieved my Fass 150 today, installing it tonight. After 3 stock lift pumps in 12 months, it will be nice not to have to worry about them going out. This last pump acted different though. I had plenty of pressure but not enough flow (according to Dodge dealer). They also told me my injection pump was bad but I think they were trying to make a sale. I have had no problems with the truck since they checked the codes. Keeping my fingers crossed.

How long did the install take and how hard was it?
