today my truck wont turn off with the key have to pop the hood and turn off by lever I have not done anything new to truck what should i check and how thanks keith

 

It is probably your fuel shut off solenoid. It is located on the rear of the Injection Pump. The easiest thing to do is to cut away the top portion of the rear pump bracket, This will make it easy to remove the solenoid. It has one or tow wires attached to the top of it. I would remove it then take the spring and plunger out then reinstall it until you can find a new one. Shop around because prices vary widely. A Bosch rebuilder can get you one but they will need the pump number. I'm sure others will be able to give you other sourses for one.

I just had the same problem with my 91 ,it was indeed the shut off solenoid,the way I got to mine was to remove the shield on the side of the motor,two bolts on top and one down near the bottom 10mm I think ,once I removed those the whole thing just kinda lays down out of the way,that made it easy to get to.I was able to locate a shut off solenoid through o'reilly auto parts for about 75 bucks.Dodge wanted like 200 for it . Once I replaced that I havent had anymore trouble.

on the off chance that your ignition switch failed to cut power to the shut-off valve try to turn off with the key, than check the shut-off to see if the shut-off solenoid is still powered, ie around 12V. My old electrics are buggy as heck so nothing would surprise me. Mine did the opposite and wouldn't SEND the power from the key switch so I power it with a relay triggered by my lights, ...still love the power train but sometimes the rest....?!?!

If you dislike the thought of wasting big bucks on another solenoid, you can do like several have done and install a choke-type kill-cable in the dash that operates the manual shut-down lever, just like the ones on real trucks.

 

Your VW/Audi dealer is the cheapest place to find the shutoff solenoid. Tell 'em you want it for an '85 Golf.

Also check the sticky for a link about fixing a torn plunger - that's usually the problem.

If your wiring is bad that is one thing. However, if the solenoid is bad you may want to join the pull cable club as someone has mentioned. I bought a choke cable from Tractor Supply for $10-12 and pull a STOP lever inside the cab to stop the engine. I did this after my solenoid failed TWICE. The first one failed driving down the road on Labor Day weekend and it cost me $1000 in towing, rental, and repair shop fees because I could not repair it roadside. The second one failed in my driveway where it would stay running... not very convenient when you've got a 5 spd and trying to adjust the rear brakes because they won't hold.

If i were to put a pull cable on do i have to take out the plunger what i mean is it going to fall apart in there and choke anything from fuel thanks

 

Actually, it would be wise to go ahead and install a kill-cable, even if the solenoid is healthy, to be prepared should it decide to fail at a most inopportune time.

Sure, it can be killed by the manual lever, under the hood; but, sometimes, it is most inconvenient to try to drive and crawl around under the hood at the same time.

Also, not just any old punk is going to understand a kill-cable; so, pulling the cable when parked is a cheap effective anti-drive-it-away measure.

It also deters unauthorized brothers-in-law from "borrowing" the truck.

 

I keep seeing everyone talking about the manuel kill lever under the hood,I am fairly new to cummins and have a 91 w250 does this truck have a manuel kill? And where is it? Thanks guys

 

Yep, it has it; it's a lever on the fender side of the pump. Check in your owners manual, it should show a picture of it.
