Wish I had my 1st Gen Back..........
Wish I had my 1st Gen Back..........
I had a 93 W350 CC 5 speed I sold 2 1/2 years ago. My wife hated the ride, and the box was cracking in the corners. I thought I'd like a quad cab truck better, so I bought a really nice 99 3500 4x4 QC 5 speed. This truck has been a letdown. Not a ton of problems, but had a front wheel bearing go out and take out the rotor, hub, splived shaft, u-joint, etc. to the tune of almost $2K in parts! Only could go to Dodge for them. I think the front trackbar is going out on it too. I absolutely HATE the front end on these newer trucks!
I have since started my own business and need a true WORK TRUCK. I am convinced that the 2nd gen trucks are not near as tough as the old 1st gen. ones. Just can't beat the front lockouts, NP205, no computer, leaf springs, etc. I guess I thought that a 1 ton track, no matter what year was built like a truck.....I think I was wrong in assuming that.
Anybody else get rid of a 2nd gen to go back to a 1st gen? Am I crazy for going "backwards"? in age and mileage?

Personally I think not, Im lookin for a 1st gen 4x4 myself. I have a 2wd 93, but need a 4x4. I feel your pain, computers in cars suck. What more could a guy ask for, CTD, 205 tc, iron case 5 speed trans ,Dana 60/70 and real springs holding it all up. No wonder 1st gens have become a small fortune to get. Im about ready to give up and get an old (pre smog) 3/4 ton of any brand when they were still HD trucks. To bad for 8 mpgs, oh well.
I have the best of both worlds, a 99 and picked up a 92 several weeks ago.

Hey, i know how you feel. Check my sig. I bought a 1998.5 quad cab 4x4 to replace my 92 and guess what???? I SOLD the 1998 cuz it aint the truck. My 92 got 5MPG more than the 98 and in the first month the dash lighted up like a x-mas tree cause of a bad sensor. Then the doors didnt want to shut right, the windows seemed to be sloppy going up and down, and it shortly thereafter started to have starting troubles (you had to let the pump run a cycle before cranking-lift pump going). When the rear folding seat broke i put it up for sale and im not looking back. Never had ANY trouble with my 92 and i meen nuthin! So im keepin her. 1998 did have a stack more miles than the 92, -80,000 compared to the 60,000 on the 92.(TOTAL MILES). Look at what the kelly blue book values are for the trucks also. 18,000 on the 1998 and 7000 for the 1992. Now try to buy a decent 1st gen for anything less than $9000 and i'll kiss ya.They are coming up lately cause everyone is seeing the big picture.

I had a 94 with 248,000 full ATS tranny and a few more goodies. It got totaled and I replaced it with the 92 in my sig. Sure the 2nd gen rides a little better, a little quieter and a newer body style. But I like the first gen better. It rides like a truck and with the new springs it rides nearly as good as the 94. I don't have any track bar problems on the 92 either.
I seem to get a lot of comments on the old first gen too.
