Windshield wiper speed

I have always thought that my wipers are a bit slow even though they are on high. The other morning I turned them on to wipe the condensation off the windshield and they worked real fast, like I would expect them to work. I turned them off then on again and they went right back to slow city. They haven't sped up since. My question is, does anyone else have this problem? Any thoughts on what could be causing it? Thanks in advance...Mark

I bet you just need a new wiper motor.

Thanks Thrash, I never considered that the motor might be bad. I just always thought that they were slow and that was the first time that they sped up, so I had no reference...Mark

The motor itself was used on many mopar vehicles from the late 80's through to the 2000's. I did a bit of diggin on-line and fond the interchange for that motor....can't recall where I found it now.

I went to the wreckers and grabbed a wiper motor out of a mid 90's mini van I believe. Then I just had to disassemble both the assemblies and swap over the motor. Very straight forward and has worked flawlessly since.

Check the pivots and make sure they are not binding, the motor could just be wearing out.

Slow, most of these youngins don't know slow, you need to have vacuum wipers and trying to go up hill to know slow.

Thanks, I'll search that in the FSM. Is that something that is common to a lot of Dodges also? Sometimes I wish that it had never sped up for that short time, I was so blissfully ignorant and ever so happy ...Mark

Wow, I don't even remember that and I thought that I was old. I like the old hand operated ones on the old Model T's. Here in Phoenix, wipers are such a waste of money. They sit there on the car for months without moving and the day it finally rains, they are old, brittle and cracked and don't work for heavy nitrogenous waste material. The auto parts stores love it though, because their profits probably triple with people buying wipers...Mark

This may date me, but I remember changing out the fuel pump on 6 cylinder Cheby 235 and 261 engines for double acting fuel pumps. It had a second diaphragm pump in it specifically for boosting vacuum to the windshield wipers.

Double acting pumps were very expensive at over $20.
