Angry Window motor troubles

Well, I replaced my drivers side window motor for the second time today. The forst one split the plastic gear inside. It cost me about $40 on eBay. I bought a new one at Autozone and put it in today and ran the window up and down a few times then it stripped the teeth off the gear!

I took it back out and felt the big sector gear and discovered it had a couple of teeth missing at the very top.

I made a trip to the local bone yard and they had one for $30 so I went and ordered another window motor for it too. This is the most expensive simple repair I've ever done.

Does anyone know where I can get a door lock actuator for the left side? All the parts stores in town don't even list it.

Are you sure nothing's binding? These trucks aren't know for having problematic power windows.

Well, the previous motor lost teeth but I just replaced it and the second motor broke internally. It binds on a broken tooth on the sector gear when the window is at the top. It's my own fault for not inspecting the sector gear when the first motor broke it's teeth on the bad gear.

The gear was very rusty and yes it was probably binding at one time. It's been in a flood in deep enough water to damage the door lock motors which are mounted very low. The window motors are higher but the gear could have been partlially submerged. I just have to be more careful to inspect stuff before just installing a $60 motor.

I posted this more as a warning to inspect the gears if this happens to anyone else.

Thanks

Edwin

Are you needing the power door lock motor for the driver's side?

Edit: Well, nevermind, I can't find it anyway.

YES! I have one on the right which works fine but it would be nice to have both sides working.

Probably the motor which comes with it's own reducing gears. Make sure you lube everything while you're in there and make sure the big sector gear's teeth are in good shape.

These motors aren't the most reliable and the brushes wear out which makes them slow to a crawl. My blazers were undersized to begin with so I've had to replace one on the drivers side since it just plain wore out and the two in the back are in need of replaceing.

The motors are about $40 for a rebuilt and $60 for new. If I hadn't already bought 2 new ones I'd be buying another new one just to make sure I don't get a lemon but the bank account is getting low.

If your current one is a Seimens I'll give you the new one I stripped the teeth off of and you can use your gears and make a good one.

Send me a private email to edsmith@freeholdconsulting.com if you're interested.

Thanks for the offer, i'll let you know when I get a chance to take it apart. I might just get one from the store so I can just swap it out in a couple hours.

How do you remove the motors? My passenger side one needs work, and I have never had one off before. I already have the door panel off, but does the whole motor with sector and other parts come out as an assembly? And how does it come off of the bottom of the window?

I should have taken pics of my door with the panel off before putting it back together...but anyway, the window motor is held on by four bolts. One is easily accessed from the outside of the door and then other three on the inside.

What I did was reach my hand inside the door panel and locate the screws and then drill thru the inside metal door panel (frame). I found the screws and cut small holes in the door to access them without removing the whole window assembly.

It took about 15mins to access all three hidden screws, which was well worth it to me. I was too imtimidated to remove the window tracks and whatever else needed to come out.

Update!

I finally got a new gear and linkage from a bone yard today. They ordered one and it was the wrong side so they ordered another which was bad so a third one was ordered which came in today with the motor attached!

I installed it with the attached motor and lubed everything up real well and so far it seems to work fine.

When I got the old one out and looked it over there was no problem with the gear teeth at all. I replaced it anyway but I don't know why it would eat the gears of 3 new motors.

I now have a spare rebuilt motor in case this one goes out.

Regards

Edwin
