Will not run after fuel filter changed

Need some help ... Just replaced fuel filter on 92 CTD...
I filled up the new filter with fresh diesel and some power service additive ... Worked the primer lever 30-40 times (it never felt tight but moved freely)...
Started truck and she ran for about 20seconds and died?

Is she air locked? How do I prime filter? Should the prime lever become tight? Can I prime from the injectors and which one should I prime first?

I usually crack #4 as it is easy to reach for me. Pump some more and when you get a fairly good puddle forming, crank it. It will most likely sputter a minute. Once is seems ready, tighten the injector. Bet this will work for you.

If it ran with a full filter then stopped I'd double check the filter is tight and the gasket from the old filter was not left in the engine. Loosen the bleeder screw on the filter housing until fuel comes out the bleeder while pumping the lever on the lift pump. If the lift pump does not pump bump the engine over a little and try again. If the pump lever is on the high part of the cam it will not pump. I would then crack at least 3 of the injectors and crank until you get good fuel flow then tighten the injector lines and see if it will run. Good luck.

Bump the motor over just a bit, as it sounds like the lift pump is not priming.
If the LP is not in the right spot on the cam, it will not flow fuel correctly.

Looks like as I was slowly typing and answering the phone at the same time.

I cracked #1 injector and cranked engine ... She started sputtering then died ... I then cracked all injectors and cranked engine I could see the fuel spurting and she fired up ... I started tighten the injectors and before I could get them all she died and will not fire now???

I think I can hear air sipping somewhere by the fuel filter ... Is that my trouble

Did the old filter leave the gasket on the housing, so you that now you two stacked gaskets?

You might be hearing the fuel returning to the tank, once it has enough pressure built up.
Does it just turn over and not catch fire?
If so, did you bump the FSS wire?

It is behind the injection pump.
It has a wire leading to it with a spade connector.
If you knocked the wire when changing the fuel filter, or priming the LP, it might easily be your problem.
I can't post pictures, or would.
Use the search function or check out the sticky for a picture of it.

Quick trip to NAPA to check that I had correct fuel filter and to buy a strap type filter wrench...

Got back and repeated the install procedure...
1)Take new filter off and make sure gasket is with it... Ok
2)fill new filter with fresh diesel and a little bit of power service additive... Ok
3)spin filter on and tighten 3/4 turn with wrench... Ok
4)crack #3 injector and crank engine until I see fuel spurting out... Ok
5)turn off engine and tighten injector... Ok
6)crank engine until she fires (apx.10sec)...ok
7) she fired up and ran a little rough then smoothed out for about 1:30-2:00 minutes... Then started slowing down ... Starving for fuel?

I shut it off before she died ... I don't know what to do???

FWIW,
Out of fear...

I've never "pumped" the lever on the lift pump. It's original from 1992, and it works. I'm afraid if I use the pump feature, the diaphragm will die on me, which I'm sure is just a fear.

I just spin off the filter, fill the new filter all the way up, and install. Turn the key and it starts.

Check the fuel pressure being generated during the start and run procedure (if any). Maybe look into a new lift pump.

The truck was running fine before I changed the filter... Why would the LP go out because I changed the fuel filter? How do you check fuel pressure?

Because you didn't prime the fuel filter, and the old pump went full stroke filling it. The diaphragm gave up the ghost. It was due anyway.

Put in a new fuel pump, prime it, bleed the rack if needed, and put it in service.
