Well if the case is cracked, then I guess it's time to start cleaning things up good first to make sure it's cracked. Then disassemble time. I've seen timing covers/cases for VE pumps for sale alot on tdr and here. I also have a buddy that went from VE to p-pump, last I knew, he still had the old case. I can check for you if you want.

ok, cover is off and the KDP is gone! looks like it dropped, hit the top of the timing gear and busted out of the case breaking a small chunk off. no other apparent damage. i know i am going to get yelled at for this but if the piece of aluminum fits snugly back into place is there a reason i can't just use jb weld on it? this part of the case basically just contains the oil right? it's not under pressure. also, i assume i need to get a new dowel pin from cummins and install it correct? thanks again guys.

If it's not fixed properly it is likely to crack somewhere else later. JB Weld will get you by for a while, though.

Yes, put in a new dowel pin. That's what locates the housing and makes sure the gear mesh doesn't change. The bolts just keep the housing from falling off.

FIND THE OLD PIN!!!! Other wise it may foul up something else. It is usually in the oil pan.

Now I'm convinced the next project has got to be the KDP...

I would not even drive down the street without the KDP tabbed. It is not that big of a job to take the chance. They do fall out!

here are the pics of the gear case a little closer. i cleaned it all up, went ahead and just the jb weld. all the seams are flush and it's a nice tight fit. i have another little cover on order with cummins. we'll see how it works.

Ready To Re-install

ok i am ready to put everything back together. i used the jb weld last night to see how it would work and the piece fits snug back into place and i was able to wipe off and extra that sqeezed out. i am going to run it like this and see how it does. i have a few questions about the reinstall

1. the dowel pin has a tapered end, which end goes toward the block?
2. how much of the old cover seal has to be off? i've been working at it but it's on there pretty good.
3. is there a need for extra sealant with the cover seal?

also i will thouroghly check the case for the old pin and plan to run a magnet around the outside of the oild pan so that if the pin is in there i can "drag" it over to the plug and get it out. thanks for the help guys!

All I can say is you are one lucky person. Sorry to see that dammage to your truck, it could have been worse, and you could be replacing cam , valves and alot more. PEOPLE you got to tab that thing!

a little warning to anyone that has to remove the little cap... it's plastic and deep so BE CAREFUL. it's more like a plug and has an o-ring half way up. my local cummins dealer did not have one and he said they only had one at the factory so don't break it! i'm ready to install do i need to use gasket sealant along with the new gasket or not? thanks

ok, so i quit being lazy and remembered i have a cummins b-series manual. looked in it and it said to put a small bead of sealant on the cover only side of the gasket. the cover is installed and torqued to 18ft lb and i am draining the oil now to check for the pin. there were a few little metal pieces (tiny shavings) stuck to the magnetic drain plug but nothing that scares me. i will update again later.

Since you got a cover bolt in the little piece I think you will be OK with it JB welded.
