It is no longer a dreaded hassle to remove a cable from the battery.

A number of years ago, when I was a young teen, (1972 ish) My dad had a Toyota Land Cruiser that he had a chev 327, muncie 4spd, hurst shifter - and a GV OD - wished I had the money at the time he sold it. I digress.

The electrical in that beast was a set of homemade cables using 3/8 or 1/2 inch copper tubing squashed then drilled, the cable squooshed in and soldered. The electrical connections had the juice he needed - he ran a bit of Ham equipment (KA7DRZ - silent key) and a winch. We never had a lick of problems with electrical in that that beast. Of course he tended to overbuild.

I am with BearKiller and EClancy on this one. I would use welding cable and copper ends from NAPA - or from wherever - if I started to have problems with my stock set up or needed new cables.

All that said, a little preventive maintenance on the cables go a long way to preserving them, unless the PO didn't.

Talking I Am Not The Only Conservative One

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one that squishes together copper tubing to make copper lugs.

There are six licensed vehicles in the driveway and numerous pieces of equipment with batteries.

Most of this stuff has at least two batteries.

Some have store-bought lugs, some have squished tubing lugs, and some have some of each.

I keep several sizes of tubing around for emergencies when I need a lug and don't have it.

On a similar note, I just got done paying NAPA over five bucks for ONE large lug that I needed; then, after the fact, I found a bin full of two-to-the-pack Forney lugs of the same size, and numerous other sizes, for a buck a pack, at the Farm Machinery Show.

Needless to say, I stocked up.

Actually I have went to one now myself. I bought a 1000 CCA battery from Advance Auto Parts and it does the job for less.
