Whining getrag in 4th and 5th only
My getrag in one of my trucks whines in 4th and 5th only, goes away when in other gears or when clutch is pushed in. The old owner doesn't know when it started... Tomorrow I'm going to change the lube, overfilling of course, maybe pull a pto cover off and see if there is any endplay in the trans. Any suggestions or ideas?

4th and 5th are on different ends of the transmission... bearings or clearance (as you said...end play). Should be able to drop the drive shaft (4 bolts) and tug and push on the tail shaft. If there is play there, it needs addressing. If in doubt, put a dial indicator on the back of the tail shaft and see how much end play there actually is. The book says to set it up at .006" -.008". I imagine that when it gets worn there might be up to about .015". Your call.

The 'rag is set up with bearing preload, not clearance. I don't think any amount of runout is acceptable, but don't have the FSM in front of me for reference. Plus, the driveshaft is attached to the transfercase, so there's no way to determine anything from that angle. Sounds like the input bearing might be a little tired. Try fresh lube and go from there.

Pretty much what I figured. I'm going to pop the PTO cover off anyway and take a look. I just drained the lube, there was plenty of it in there, and it looked like it had been in there for a while, so someone didn't just change it. I've rebuilt other transmissions before, just not getrags, and have a press, so I think I'm going to give it a shot. I have a FSM, etc. Who sells a good rebuild kit? Should I look for timken or koyo bearings? I have an NV swapped 92 W250 donor, the thought of putting that in has crossed my mind also, but it needs a 3rd gear synchro, so I'd be into that too.

If you've already got the 4500 donor with all the parts you need, I'd go that route. At least you know what it needs. Just the 'rag rebuild kit will cost more than the syncro assembly on the NV and who knows what else the 'rag will need. Moving along, I've got cheap-o bearings in my 'rag. I'm no tranny builder and have put about 40k on it with no troubles.
