Hey folks... So I have a relatively new issue... When you start out from a stoplight or when I'm starting to back into a parking spot my truck will start to hop... It's the worst when backing up but pretty pronounced any time... Stop lights or initial movement... When the clutch is being used to get rolling. I was initially thinking the clutch might be contaminated somehow but i was reading abortion worn out springs...

Anyway any insight or advice would be truly appreciated.. It's really staring to bother me.

Also, I do have a full air ride system, but I tried under-inflating, over-inflating, and standard inflation and it didn't make any difference.

 

You might consider in a video camera or a digital camera that can shoot video set it up under the truck most probably with a drop light and then see if your springs are causing your wheel hop. I have done basically the same thing to see what is happening in areas I'm to old and decrepit to fold up into. You might also check transmission bolts motor mounts and anything else that might have gotten loose. Good luck, Mike.

 

I hate to think your having more problems with your trans.

But it sounds like clutch chatter to me.

It's all according to the frequency of the movement.

if it really quick it's clutch, if it's slower it could be a suspension problem.

That's really annoying.

So, what would cause clutch chatter? It's the oe replacement Sachs in there...could it be contaminated or..?

 

I have the same thing but milder i think, only started awhile back. Seems worst when the ambient temp is cool.

Mine only does it occasionally but it has me thinking of changing the clutch out.

 

Oil leaking on it can cause chatter. It causes it to grab as the pressure plate is starting to squeeze it...Mark

 

Weak engine or trans mounts will cause chatter, too. What clutch we talking? Some of them are just grabby, my Con-Fe is a mite touchy.

 

Mine is a Not-that-old Sachs OE replacement, it's a little bouncy when cold.

But i have slipped it a few times in 5th, and my big tires don't help anything...

Also, a rough flywheel can cause chatter I think, you had it resurfaced right? And i don't mean with sand paper.

 

The clutch is a Sachs OEM replacement 13". The flywheel was resurfaced and rechecked for true after I had some issues and even had a new clutch setup. It probably has ~3000 miles or less on it.

Oil is a concern as I did replace my rear seal, so I'm worried I either didn't do it right or it could be defective. Or something...hard to say. I guess I could pull the slave cylinder and look in the hole for any sign of fluid. It's even possible I lubed the shaft/pilot too much and that could be it. I really don't relish taking the tranny out again, but it's really bothering me.

Man...if I didn't have bad luck...

PS - Motor and tranny mounts are also new at that 3k mile point.

 

If your truck is a club cab there could be another problem. I believe there was a recall to address this. When I bought mine new I had to bring it back to have the dealership realign the drive line angles. The carrier bearing needs a 1/2 inch spacer set between it and the frame. They also added angled shims to the rear spring pack to get the angles right. This did not totally solve the launch shudder but did make it better. I was able to launch without shudder in first gear when towing.

A rear main leaking is unlikely to get oil on the clutch. We had a truck and the rear main got so bad that it would leave a 12" round puddle of oil under it in about a minute after shutting the engine off. Slid the trans back put a seal in same clutch and it was fine.

If you have a rear valve cover leaking that would be more likely to get oil on the clutch.

 

my rear main leaked bad for 1400 miles and there wasnt anything on the clutch. the big old flywheel keeps most of the oil on the engine side and the getrag has that nice hole in the bottom of the bellhousing to keep the oil from puddling up.
