At what times do i use my overdrive ?
1991 Dodge, 250 Turbo Diesel, 4 spd auto, A518.
Sometimes speedometer does not work, when driving does not shift out then speedometer will jump up and register around 60 mph, which is probably right, but it on ly jumps into that. Also, around 50 mph, will shift back and forth, a week ago, I overfilled tran fluid, it was low at time. I checked and it is slightly over fill line, aoubt a half quart over full. Was slightly slipping before I refilled?
How do I get tran fluid back down to where it should be and if it keeps this up what do I need to do?
What is the best repair manual besides Chilton? Where is the fuse box under the dash> we have looked where manual states and it ain't there!

The fuse boxs is below the stearing col, u will see four small screws and square plate remove the screws the fuse boxs is hooked to it. Be easy with it, very easy to break. Has for the trans oil u will have to drain it and refill it to the right amout. The cable for the OD might be out of ajustment. Good luck

If you have a vacuum pump, you can stick a clean hose down the tranny tube and suck out the fluid that way...if your pan was like my old one it doesnt have a drain plug (a good thing to add in, though).

Hi ;sorry to here about your tranny problems. The little bit of slipping that you notice is it the first drive of the day ie back out of driveway or starting off........... the tq converters in the 518A sometimes drain fluid back to the pan so when you take of the trannny is trying to fill the tq as well as move you simliar to low fluid feeling .I have got in to the habit of putting the truck in neutral while it's warming up the tranny pumps fluid in [n] but not[p] this is also wise when cooling down the beast after a hard workout. as far as the fluid goes i was told that these trannies work better with a "touch" more fluid than the full level mark[tranny tech] ..run mine about 1/4 inch higher.... good luck

It sounds like there is a problem with the vehicle speed sensor (speedo intermittent is the clue). Because it works sometimes, I suspect a wiriing problem. Could be as simple as corrosion on the contacts at the VSS. Crawl under there and check it out, it screws onto the side of the trans or transfer case where a speedo cable would go.
