What Truck To Go With???

ok so heres what i got. i just recently sold my 06 cause with the payment and trying to make it scream was really cutting into my check book. so im looking to get a 93 4x4 5 speed dually. i am going to be doing alot under the hood of this truck because i have a drag strip 2 miles from my house and i would love to make an old 1st gen that could burn some little imports. is the truck im looking at good for me? i mean should i get 2 or 4 wheel drive, 5 speed or auto??? im new at these 1st gens so anything would help.

with that much weight, its oviously going to be harder to move, if its going to be a drag pickup, um go with a 2wd with slicks and a regular cab, from my experience, every 100 lbs lighter you go, its another .10 of a second faster, and its still a first gen, but id get an intercooled pickup, with overdrive and find a differnt torque converter for it, its going to be slippy, then find the sticky at the top of the page to make it go fast, a 2wd also has less weight in the front and no transfer case so everything just works simpler and easier.

For a fast truck, with minimal mods, you want a 2wd, regular cab, Non Intercooled truck. Those things will really boogie. For a drag truck, you'll obviously want an automatic, so a good converter will do wonders as well.

89-91 Non I/c D250 with a 727 trans. Good converter. ($600), shift kit,

You'll need to invest in some slicks, EGT/boost gauges, maybe a locker and some free pump tweaks and your in the low 14's.

I'd go with a 2wd 89-91.5 N/Ic truck and toss a converter and an I/C in it crank the pump

racing a 5 speed, your gonna hurt the trans power shifting it.

You'll need a good clutch to hold off the line, you'll need to do the ole dump n' go. Talk to GLHS on this forum about racing a 5 speed truck he's the man.

That's why he needs to get an auto. You'll never be able to shift a 5spd, especially the 'Rag as fast as an auto.

You want a drag truck, do like these guys say. But, if you are going to stick with an auto trans. go with an o/d like a 47RH so you have lock-up as well. I have raced my truck with no lock-up and think I could do much better if I had it. Just my $.02.

The reason we have all been telling you to get a Non I/C truck, is because they have huge (compared to the I/C) stock injectors, and they respond to pump tweaks a lot better as well.

You can do it with a '92 or '93 but you will probably need to put injectors on your shopping list. With an intercooled truck you also get overdrive which helps a lot as well, but like '93 Fury said, a 47RH with lockup will be the ultimate 1st Gen drag tranny.
