What tranny is this and will it fit in my 93dually

I got this 6 speed tranny practically free he said it is out of a 2004 dodge one ton with the 24v Cummins. Will this fit with modifications of course in my 12v one ton with 360 getrag. It is physically alot bigger but i don't mind cutting stuff if it is worth it. It didn't come with the tail cone or yoke or the clutch, clutch fork, slave cylinder or t/o bearing. Would any of my stuff transfer. Is this a NV5600, it doesn't say new venture any where on it. Any help or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks, Don. Oh and I did do a search but I didn't get the answers I needed.

Looks like an aluminum case. I'd say its a G56, because the NV5600 is a cast iron case with an aluminum bell housing.

You can see on the tag right below "BRASIL" it says G56.

Other than that I have no idea.

Yup G56. That tranny is supposedly a bullet proof beast. I couldn't tell you what modification you would need. I guess it would be whatever you would do for the NV5600

One thing to keep in mind is that the OD ratio on the G56 isnt as high as the getrag or NV5600, so if you run a lot on the highway, or have 4.10s, I'd consider that. If you dont care, or only run 60mph, dont worry about it.

What do you plan to do with the Getrag?

Right under the "Brasil" is "Tipo G56-6" or Type G56-6. I would take it to mean G56 6 speed.

Thanks, for the replies, I hadn't heard of the G56 before. It is an alminum case relatively light but massive. I would like to install it in my 1 ton as I do alot of towing with it are the 12v and 24v bell housing patterns the same? If I get it installed the getrag would be for sale, it still works great and has less than 120K and has always been overfilled.

Unless you just want a 6 speed, I'd say stick with what works. As long as you keep oil in it, and dont lug it (<1600rpm loaded), The G360 will last as long as the newer ones. Parts are getting hard to find for the NV5600, the NV4500 has its share of problems. However, parts from a 3rd Gen should bolt up to the block, though I am far from an expert in this particular field.

As far as I know, each transmission has its own bell housing and bolt pattern. I know guys (myself included) who have towed with GCVWs in the mid 20K range, and had no problems. Just take it easy, ease into the throttle and let off easily, (not to say you cant drive fast- just take it easy getting to speed) and all will be fine. Some guys remove them and reshim the bearings every 120K or so.

The engine adapter plate will need to be updated to a 94 or newer, which then requires a 94 up starter, and a spacer to work with the flywheel.
The dual mass clutch is not desired, so you need a special flywheel to run a conventional diaphram clutch, like a Southbend. They make a clutch for this tranny.
You said you didn't get the clutch fork? Too bad, you'll need it. The clutch hydraulics will need to be changed over too.

Because of the Dual Mass original clutch design, this tranny needs different stuff than the NV-5600.
The tranny still may not fit in the tunnel of you cab without some massaging. The tranny is tall too, along with a huge bellhousing compared to the Getrag or even the NV units.

It looks like this transmission is out of a 4 wheel drive. Is yours a 4 wheel drive too?

How can you tell it is four wheel drive. I was thinking it was two wheel drive just missing the tail cone and yoke?

The 4wd output will have a flange with 6 holes in it, with the output shaft protruding slightly, as the picture you have shows. A 2wd will have a longer tailhousing with an output shaft seal, so that a slip yoke style driveshaft can be inserted in to the end.
