What to look for on HX35s

Looking at classifieds and such for HX35 turbos and don't know what to look for.

What years will bolt on the easiest?
What is needed to make them fit?
It it worth it to get one, or just put a 12cm on what I have and call it good?

Pulling a trailer with the slow spool of the 18.5 makes up shifting a PITA at times.

12 valve ones work the best (95-98). They are pretty much a bolt in for intercooled models, though with the wastegate housing the downpipe needs to move back about an inch. There is a very significant and noticeable difference in hx35 and h1c. If you pull heavy loads often youll probably wanna find a 14cm wastegate, but Im no expert on the 12 so it may not heat up too bad.

Just dont pay too much for one-you can get a piers hx35/40 hybrid with a 16cm housing for around 650. I picked up my hx35/14cm wg housing with a bad wastegate actuator on it for $200. Craigslist is a great place to start. Ebay is alright, but some people have had problems with the ones they got.

I almost think I would rather have the 12cm for the price vs a 14. I am not pushing huge power or after market injectors. I am 1 turn past the lock collar on the pump and have enough power for my needs now.

I just hate that dark cloud of black smoke and no power under 1400 rpm because of the lazy turbo. I have to run up to 2500rpm or more to make some of the shifts with a load when not on level ground.

I found my hx at a local junkyard. Had it layin' on the shelf. Its worth a try. Hess and sons salvage, Junction City Kansas. They are one of the few yards around here that will even think about carrying anything dodge cummins! Most yards say "don't have em, don't want em!"

I called them, you got the good deal!

What years exactly did they use the HX35? Was 94 the only year for the WH1C and they went to it in 95, or was it 96?

Sorry! My dad, 95' has a WH1C! Normally 95' thru 02' standard tranny trucks and auto trucks to 2000 i think. the later autos use a hy-35.
good luck

A WH1C is just as good as an HX-35. Get whichever you can.
