What is the best way to set timing??

What is the best way to set timing advance.?? I set it the 1/8" for a while and then bumped it another 1/8 inch and runs much better top end. Anyone no how far to go??

Jim,

Don't bump it too far. If your rig has a 'metallic' sound and smells caustic, your timing is too advanced and you'll have higher drive pressures. I don't have the proper tools to do the spill port method so I just do it by ear until it 'sounds' right. It'll have that nice Cummins beat to the idle.
