what ATF is right?

Bone stock A518 102,000 miles.
Which is the right fluid?Chilton's says Dexron III.
Also, any idea on capacity? It has the under bed auxillary cooler and the 1 in the grill, I dropped the pan and changed the filter so its dry and all 3 coolers are empty because the truck is completly disassembled and its bensitting for 2 yrs so, I assume the converter has drained some also. Thanks

Dexron Mercon 3 or you could even pony up the coin and run the new atf+4 synthetic in it.A normal trans service calls for 4 qts. I think your just going to have to throw 6 or 8 quarts in it and fire it up and run it throught the gears and check and add till full.IMHO

My owner's manual and the dipstick said Dexron II / III are fine.
The owner's manual for my 91 recommends ATF+ (Type 7176).
Chrysler TSBs in past suggest ATF +4 is suitable to replace Type 7176.

I would say use whichever you prefer.

ATF+4 is the general rule of thumb. You can buy genuine mopar ATF+4 at the world of walls.

if one wants a little firmer shift ford type F will work too. some clutch type converters dont like it though. the reason ford used type F is they found they could use one less clutch plate in each drum and get the same holding power. do the numbers on dollars saved. it is a fair amount of dollars. WILL NOT hurt the seals. this old man used it in business for 30 plus years and still does in my personal vehicles

thanks for the replies!!
One more question. I`ve read some post while searching in here that advise against flushing the trans. What is wrong with that?? I always thought it was the best way to get all the fluid (and contaminates) out of the system

The reason some think its a bad idea is because it can dislodge "shnurde" build up ,gummy crap and put it in places it could never get to under normal usage. But the reverse flush will sure put it there and cause problems.

Atleast that my understanding.

i`ve had good luck with flushing tranys in my vehicles. I had a 96 F350 crew cab stroke/E4OD that had 227,000 original miles when I got rid of it and a good friend of mine(who is a Ford trans tech) said anything over 100K on that trans and your on borrowed time. So I attribute the 25-30K routine trans flushes to longer trans life
