Can I get an applause? That seal is kind of a PITA 'cause you gotta pull the A/C compressor (if you have A/C to begin with), remove the belt so the tensioner can stay with the bracket, drain the coolant, remove the lower hose, remove the bracket, etc... lol. I figured that bracket was integrated in the block. Therefore, no seal needed. I never would've guessed there was a seal back there until I replaced my head gasket in August of '09.

Non i/c and you have a crossflow radiator? Did you swap radiators at one point?

No, I did not swap radiators. I guess it was stock that way, unless someone changed it. My date of manufacture was like Nov 1990. I just got the truck a couple of months ago (my first truck ).

The AC had to be the hardest part of the whole deal trying to move it without disconnecting it then reconnecting it while trying to maneuver around everything. LOL it was almost comical.

When I was looking around down there it looks as though I have another coolant leak were the AT cooling unit is.

I also have an ATF leak around the gasket for the ATF filter pan. It just looks like the gasket needs to be replaced--good time to do an ATF/Filter change. Oh what fun it is to buy a fix it upper.

Glad you got that seal in. Do you have a part number for the "inlet" seal you replaced?

Thanks

The "Water Inlet Seal's" real description is SEAL, RECTANGULAR RING Cummins Part No. 3906697 and it cost $1.56 and a heck of a lot of work for one stupid seal (unfortunately that wasn't the total cost at Cummins ).

Thermostat kit (with gasket) part number was 3802968 and cost $38.

Does the lip on the thermostat gasket go toward the thermostat?

Pictures are worth a thousand words... Here is the link that I used when I replaced mine. Note that on the original there was some RTV sealant from the factory. Cummins said that when you replace it you don't need to use RTV.

It is from the Sticky: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...6&postcount=10

Here's another: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=146039

Bringing this back from the past.... I had another water leak issue on my 91'

It turned out the seal for the water pump went out as well. The water pump looked fine and felt pretty tight (incredible after 350000+ miles and 21.5 years).

I went ahead and replaced it anyway though. I now have zero water leaks for the moment and my coolant is ridiculously clean with the coolant filter installed on the system.

With trucks this age I guess the seals and hoses just start wearing out after awhile. Oh well, pretty cheap to fix. Can be time consuming though .
