Water in Fuel Light on

I just changed my fuel filter and I now have the "Water in Fuel" light on. I filled the filter with diesel before installing it and primed it by bumping the engine a couple of times before starting it. It seems to run okay but now the light is on? I did notice that when I go to drain water through the drain plug I only get a few drops. I used to get a steady stream when I drained it. Any ideas?

The most common problem is the WIF sensor probes shorting on the spring in the bottom of the filter. Check the resistance across the sensor plug. If it is 0 ohms, you need to pull the filter down and pop the sensor out and reposition the spring so it doesn't short the probes.

I had the same problem happen to me after the same thing....a new fuel filter. In my case I found one of the wires leading from the water in fuel sensor there on the bottom of the fuel filter had a broken wire hence the water in fuel light stayed on. Found a new sensor via Google search for about $25 delivered. The local Dodge dealer wanted $54.90 for the exact same thing. I had to replace the sensor as the wire had broke right off at the plastic so no repair was possible. Next time I change filters I'll make the repair and use the new sensor. That was easy and unlike so many other times working on this truck... Anyways good luck!! Chuck

I don't know how I missed this post but I paid for it today. Changed fuel filter yesterday and filled filter with diesel. Ran truck but I don't remember the water in fuel light being on. I started the truck today and there it was. Naturaly yesterday I dumped what was left of my can of diesel into the tank. I figured when I removed the filter I could prime it with the handle on the lift pump. I adjusted the spring and ohms tested it (learn a lot when I research in this forum), installed the filter, and checked the light. Everything looked good. I started pumping on the lift pump and finally gave up after an hour of off and on pumping. I pulled the filter and there wasn't a drop in it. I strained the fuel that I had dumped from the filter. There was a boatload of trash that the new filter had picked up. When I run this tank low it is coming off for cleaning (note to search forum for fuel tank cleaning). I salvaged enough fuel to fill the filter 2/3s full. Luckily wife was gone to church so I went to the kitchen for her bottle of vegetable oil. Worked great. It would be good if there was a way on this forum to search a task ie; change fuel filter and pull all of the common things that go wrong. After installing something is not the time to find out that springs get in the way and that the cam is in the wrong position to use the primer. When I searched fuel filter these things didn't show up and my alldata didn't mention them either. Just a thought. This truck makes me a firm beliver in Murphy's Law. I spun the engine a couple of times and checked for pressure on the primer with no luck but that's another post.

That did the trick. I took it out and had continuity across the sensor repositioned the spring no continuity and now no "Water in Fuel" light. Thanks!!!
