Wait to Start light flashing?

I went for my daily joyride today and after a few miles of fast highway driving I stoped at a stop sign and I noticed the Wait to Start light was flashing. I kept driving and at the next stop, I shut the engine down and re-started it and the lightwas no longer flashing.

I drove on to the AutoZone and stopped for about 5 minutes. When I started back up, the Wait to Start light was flashing again! I turned the key off and back on before the engine stopped and the light stopped flashing.

What's up with that?

Edwin

Random flickering or in some sort of timed flashing?

I didn't notice any dipping of the lights. The truck ran normally. The temp was about 60 outside and the engine temp was normal.

My Cummins book says that means there's an open circuit in the temp sender circuit.

OK, thanks. I'll have to check the connection to the sender. It's 15 years old so there may be some corrosion. I'll check it tomorrow.

I had an 89, same problem. Dirty connection was hard to find as it looked good. So be sure you clean them well and maybe crimp them a little. There is very little voltage going thru them so they must be very clean.. Good luck.

We had my dads doing that by accident. What it was, was the temp sender under the heating grid was unplugged. Once we plugged it back in it quite flashing. I would say it has something to do with the sender connection, or the sender it's self.

Would having a loose connection/dirty connection in the temp sender cause the wait to start light and the grid heaters be on constantly when cold? In the cold weather, mine does not want to go off...a random flashing of the wait to start light...just unplugged grid heater so it's not on all the time, but the light still is...

The controller or the PCM should shut off the grids after a certain period of time no matter how cold the temp sender is reading. Mine cycles them for about 5 minutes if the temp is below 20.

Old thread, I know..... but this happened with my '90 yesterday, repeated flashing like your microwave clock after a power outage.

I read this thread last night then checked the terminal at the temp. sensor and it was loose.

I cleaned the terminals up, gave the female connector a slight crimp and reinstalled and all was well today.

To those that replied above, thank you. :-)
