w250 1993 transmission slow to go in reverse
Hey guy's Im new to the first gen but I just bought a 1993 w250 and the transfer case is grawling when it gets to about 25 mph but I have a new transfer case. The transmision has less than 2000 miles on it sence rebuild but it is slow to go into reverse somtimes. Is that a problem or is it just tc filling and could the two problems be conected to each other thanks for the help
no I just read that it needs to be in N but the TC is full. you can here the grawl coming from 4x4 shifter. It gets worse if you move the shifter around when it's moving. I think it's the front berring cause you can put TC in N and trans in gear and it still make's grawl just not as bad
The transfercase shifter rattle is very common.

WELCOME to our forums.
I wouldn't think to two are related. When you start the truck, slip it into Neutral for 15 or so seconds before going to reverse or forward. If the converter's leaking down while parked, those few seconds of idle time will allow the converter to refill before you engage the trans.
That may be all that's needed to clear up that delay.
You say the trans was recently rebuilt, did they slip in a "Shift-kit" of any sort? Many of those kits include means of correcting the converter draining when parked (kit allows fluid flow to the converter when in park & Neutral).
New transfer-case?

Unfortunately, these trucks are extremely sensitive to where the 4wd lever is located. I've owned 2 of these trucks in the last year, and each one had a slightly different sweet spot where the lever sat quiet and without noise. In my old truck, I had to turn off the truck to get it to shift from 4h to 2h, but my 92 just goes right in. I also lubricated the crap out of the shift linkage below, both from in the cab by removing the boot, and from below. I also read the label on the drivers sun visor which made all the difference. Made it shift much nicer
Take the advice of those who posted here already. Check fluid in neutral. Put truck in neutral for 15-30 seconds before shifting into either R or D when first starting your day...or if it's sat for a while. I do this each time I use the truck and I've had no more of the issue you're noticing.

Ok so I checked the trans in N and it has to much fluid in it and the trans fluid is brown like it's a little burnt. It also wont go faster than 55 mph. like its not shifting threw the gears. will to much fluid hert transmission?? funny though transfer case wasent that bad today
Time to do a drain and filter swap!!!
Every time I start my truck and want to go backwards, I just shift to reverse and just sit there till it starts moving on it's own. Usually about 30-45 seconds.
Don't cheap out on ATF

There are a lot of testimonies on this website (use the search function) that tell of owners who've had the same issue as you, that changed their fluid, filter and even went as far as flushing the system out completely, to only have the trans working normally again right afterwords.
Flush the tranny out, adjust the bands, adjust the line pressure, change the filter, and see what happens. If it works, you win. If it doesn't.... you're going to have a trans shop rebuild the trans completely. All this info is in the sticky, and tells you exactly how to do it.
Simple as that.
Good luck, and tell us how it works out.
BTW.... Good looking rig. Gold color ??? Nice flatbed, although it looks like you could use some new front springs to make it ride level.
