Type of power steering fluid?

I need to change this soon in my '93 Cummins. I bought it used ~ 7 years ago and only put ~800 miles/ year on it. I want to change the power steering fluid but am not exactly sure what kind to use. I appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Jim

I just replaced the high pressure hose on mine and I flushed and refilled it using Spirax ATF, same as I used in my A-727 transmission.

I have been using Universal Tractor Transmission/Hydraulic Fluid for years in ALL power-steering systems.

The stuff in the pretty little bottles is just the same stuff in a smaller purpose-labeled bottle.

I agree with all the above. ATF, any power steering fluid or hydraulic fluid are all good. You can go to a Dodge dealer and spend many times the price on the specified fluid, or use any of the above and take the wife for a burger on what you save.

Great! I was going to do this a while ago but never had time. I have a new, big bottle of Valvoline P.S. fluid I was going to use and it sounds like it's OK.

I appreciate all the replies!

Thanks,
Jim

I like the Red Line synthetic PS best myself.

AFAIK, it's the most extreme duty fluid available, within reasonable price.

I'm not partial to brand so long as the fluid is clear -- which makes it much easier to tell when your entire PS system has been completely flushed. Flushing the system is easy; complete instructions in post 13 of this thread:
