What type of power steering fluid?

Hey!

I need to add some power steering fluid to the 91 Cummins in my 1979 Chevy, and of course the 79 Chevy owners manual doesn't tell me what kind to use. I have had vehicles that asked for ATF, but I don't believe the Dodges like ATF. Any particular kind of power steering fluid I should get?

Thanks!
Richard

I need to know the same thing.

By the way, I have a 78 Chevy 4x4, NP205, 4sp that I bought new.

I have been thinking about putting a 1st Gen. Cummins in it.

Did you have to cut into the firewall to make room??

I would like to retain my transmission and transfer case as they have been through over 400,000 of the roughest miles imaginable and not a screw turned on either.

Tell us more about your conversion.

Back in 1998 I had to replace the steering box on my 92 CTD. The place that did the instal filled the reservoir with ATF Type F. When I questioned them they said they would only guarantee the work provided ATF Type F were used. They said if I ever have to add any fluid to only use Type F. In 7 years I have had no leaks and never had to add any fluid.

I am going to change out the steering gear box and hoses tomorrow. I plan on using Amsoil universal ATF. It is compatable with Dexron and Type F.

Several years ago my truck sat a long time, and once i started useing it again the lower steering shaft seal started leaking quite a bit. I added PS fluid and it kept leaking. I bought more PS fluid with a "stop leak" in it and although it did seal it some, it still leaked waaaay to much. Finally, i put some Dextron 2 in it, and that has sealed it up fairly well, but not completely.

For now i've been running the Dextron in it, and plan to keep on useing it for the time being.

Mine leaked real bad when I got it. Out of desparation one day (ran out of fluid and the pump was empty) I put in some used 15-40. Barely leaked a drop since and it doesn't groan like it used to on 0* mornings. I suppose I'm not recommending using used motor oil, but it seems to work in a pinch.

FWIW, Ford's warranty required type F in vehicles up to 1998 and Dexron/Mercon in vehicles 98-present. The steering Box vehicles always got the Type F in them.

I know I learnED something from there...
